So far this book has been a good point of reference. It was recommended by the coin3d project as a good place to start investigating the Open Inventor approach to programming and design. The information here was introduced in 1994 so the concepts aren't new in terms of technology, but as far as I have seen nothing has been outdated or deprecated.
