Publisher's Note Since the appearance of the fourth edition in 1989, there have been further remarkable changes in the fabric of the airline industry. The industry has seen a series of mergers and consolidations, reconstruction of route patterns around "hub" cities, unprecedented deficits, bankruptcies of two major carriers, and foreign airlines purchasing equity interest in American carriers. This work is a fine introduction to the economics of the airline services of the United States, both domestic and international, presented in a relatively simple yet college-level text. It contains substantial revisions consistent with recent changes, including a complete rewriting of many portions. It can be adopted for such courses as "Aviation Administration," "Air Transportation," and "Economics of Air Transportation." For each chapter there are self-testing questions, so that students can check their progress.
