Freshly graduated from college with a promising future, 22 year-old Christopher McCandless instead walked out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. What happened to him on the way transformed this young wanderer into an enduring symbol for countless people. Was Christopher McCandless a heroic adventurer or a naive idealist, a rebellious 1990s Thoreau or another lost American son, a fearless risk-taker or a tragic figure who wrestled with the precarious balance between man and nature? McCandless' quest took him from the wheat fields of South Dakota to a renegade trip down the Colorado River to the non-conformists' refuge of Slab City, California, and beyond. Along the way, he encountered a series of colorful characters at the very edges of American society who shaped his understanding of life and whose lives he, in turn, changed. In the end, he tested himself by heading alone into the wilds of the great North, where everything he had seen and learned and felt came to a head in ways he never could have expected.

Based on a true story of top student and athlete Christopher McCandless, an Emory graduate, who abandons his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness where he met his untimely fate.

Like that title? It just came to me. Pretty fitting for this true story of a young fellow whom wanted to get away from it all and boy did he. Beautifully shot in the Alaskan wilderness, this is a must see for anyone that can relate to a time in their lives when one's thoughts may have wondered; "what's it all about, anyway?".
Well, thats what I remember from this one anyway.

into the wild.....excellent one of the great adventures
Review created: 07/10/09

It was just a real like you knew the actual person being depicted in the story..a real humble person who everyone should strive to be like and step back and really look at what we created as a society...that we are brainwashed as a society to see everything the corporational way....where we are duped out of thinking out of the box how incramentalism rules our everyday lives....money is worshipped as a idol...we need to go back to nature....the only way we can be free from the grid of the system.......sean penn did a awesome job making this a great journey to finding out who we really are....a definate must see.....

  GREAT MOVIE!!

I was blown away the acting in this movie. Emile Hirsch was phenomenal. The grandfather was also truly amazing to watch. This movie really cuts at your heart. It's a true story of a recent college grad doing what every single one of us has wanted to do at one time or another but never had the "balls" to do so --- Run off into the wild, all alone, away from civilization. Although he did not make it, he died just where he wanted to.

The young man in this story (in his story)compleetly sucks you in. This kid is so likeable. What he gave up to find happiness and how he found it and what he discovered about true happiness was so enjoyable to watch. This movie touches all your emotions and the music by Eddie Vedder was apsolutly a perfict fit. The ending....wow.... you'll have to see for your self. A must see.

My boy friend had the book long before the movie came out.He kept telling me to read it, but I never got around to it.
The movie was at the video store about a month before I decided to rent it. I can't believe I waited that long to see it.
It is an Excellent movie, very touching.I've watched it quite a few times since I bought it & it still makes me cry.
I also went & bought the soundtrack, rented the book from the local library(my boyfriend gave his copy away)
I recommend the 2 disc edition its great at telling the behind the scenes/making of the movie & characters.I also recommend getting the book & soundtrack.

Incredible story & well made film. I did not receive the 2 Disc set so I cannot comment on that but I saw the film in the theaters and simply had to own it. It is a beautiful, inspiring, and heart wrenching story that gives pause to think about our lives and our soceity and how we can and should all make more of it. Gain some perspective...

Incredible movie about an incredible journey!

This movie highlights the human spirit. It makes material possessions seem trivial as "Alexander Supertramp" attempts to conquer society, himself, and nature.

This is an amazingly entertaining, thought provoking, and visually impressive movie. I recommend it for all audiences.

This movie has a message. Some people might find this movie unmoving, but for me, I found it very moving. I will not tell the end of the movie, but it is about a young man on an adventure to escape the confines of society and find a better life for himself. Along the way he finds lessons in nature and other people he meets and finds himself.

Great movie about an interesting person.
Review created: 03/22/08

Great movie about the few years of Christopher Mccandless's where he found himself, and eventually lost himself, into the wild. Feeling betrayed by his parent's socially and romantically artificial relationship, after college he sets out on an adventure of a lifetime.
After driving his Datsun to the desert, he begins to walk across the west, visiting places like the Salton Sea, the Mojave Desert, and kayaks the Colorado river, settling in Bullhead city Arizona for a few months. All the while planning and saving to eventually leave society behind, and go to Alaska.
He meets wonderful people, and thats what really makes this movie a treat, the lives he touched and the lasting memories they would know of him.
It was a tragedy that he perished in the end, but in the wilderness, you must be sure you know absolutely what you are doing, and the environment that you are in. He took that risk and lost, which is a true shame, but not foolish in any aspect.
