  Excellent & Tragic Story

I was first introduced to this wonderful story in college as a required read. And I am so grateful that it was! I LOVE this book and found myself becoming attached to some of the people in this action/adventure epic. This book is very well written, easy to understand for us non-climbers, and the author makes it so easy to envision the whole story and the events as they are happening. I strongly recommend this book! I read it at least once a year.

Krakauer has written a gripping account of adventure turned disastrous on Everest where conditions can change from relatively clear to whiteout blizzard in a matter of hours. If you enjoy adventurous non-fiction, this is a page-turner you will not be able to put down. Highly recommended!

This was a book that I'd heard great things about... wanted to read it for myself. I would highly recommend it, however, it is a true and tough read. Mt. Everest isn't at all forgiving. John Krakauer does and excellent job of relaying his story from the mountain.

This book really does a great job in describing the impressive struggle required for people to scale Mt. Everest, especially the tragic events of the 1996 expedition. This book will keep your attention, and keep you pushing on to see what happens next. A great tale of human adventure and tragedy all rolled into one. Definately recommended!!!!!

This book is very well written and its content will make you want to keep reading. I felt like I spent a few hours on the face of Everest. Be sure to have your favorite tea on hand before you get into the middle of the book.

I watched the tv show Everest and it made me interested im MT Everest. In to thin air is a true story about a guided trip up everest that went wrong , by a accumulation of mishaps ending in the death of some of the worlds best Mt climbers. It is well developed and makes you feel like you were there. I bought the movie into thin air and it did not due the book justice.

One of the best books I have read. But no better understanding of what drives people to do such insane things as climb Everest. Best I can tell, they are insane.

Very good book. Gives you some insight of what it takes to climb Mt. Everest. Makes you realize the months of preparation, commitment and determination people have to climb the mountain. The book I felt was very honest and open from his standpoint. It stated what he felt to be fact and stated it clearly.

Many facts in this book and it is a slower read. The ending is sad. However, again it was a very good book

I had to buy this book for my English class. The book was ok if you like to read about mountain climbing. I didn't too much like it but it was interesting to read about how those people died, especially for the sake of their family.

Awesome, Gripping Book! One of My All Time Favorites!
Review created: 02/14/08

This book reads very well, it doesn't leave the reader bored, and it really gives you the feeling that you're somehow there watching the whole story unfold. Jon Krakauer does a great job introducing the characters to you, and making you feel as though you know them. It's just a great story from beginning to end, very emotional. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a great drama - whether you're a Mount Everest kinda person or not!

A Riveting, Can't Put Down Read!
Review created: 02/07/08
by:

My husband and I had began watching the Discovery Channels "Everest: Beyond the Limit". We had become fascinated with Mt. Everest. I began to search for books to read, and this one came up every time. Not only does it help you understand what it takes to climb such a mountain but it is a tragic story. I have read the book twice now. Kraukauer's writing is so descriptive and clear. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

  actual climber
Review created: 06/09/07

I really enjoyed reading this book as it is a documentable event. Quite often books are a one dimensional read ei. boring but this book delves in why these climbers pick up the challenge of climbing the summit. It met all of my expectations. With a book such as this, one can close their eyes and imagine as Krakauer takes them to Everest...it is an adventure and one I would recommend for anyone.

I bought this book because I had already read it and wanted to have a soft cover copy for my parents to read on the plane on their way to Europe. It was such an amazing story that for two days I could not put the book down. I told them that they must read this book. The detail and descriptions that Jon Krakauer uses really lets you in and feel the pain and emotions they went through. I will read this book over and over again. I have read many of Jon Krakauer's books and I love them all. He is an excellent non-fiction writer.

it was fine, but unless you have a strong vocabulary, it wont make any sense. i think to fully appreciate the book, you may want to look into the whole climbing mt. everest thing... it will help a lot... but it was well written.. though theres not much to say about it
