Into the west is a great Western miniseries thats even better on DVD.
The DVD includes all 4 disks with many extra features like The cast of Into the west,The Communication gap,The making of into the west, and a music video by Sarah McLachlan.
There are 6 Episodes total that run for a little over 9 total hours.
Each Episode is about an hour and a half long.
Episode 1 Wheel to the Stars.
Episode 2 Manifest Destiny.
Episode 3 Dreams & Schemes.
Episode 4 Hell on Wheels.
Episode 5 Casualties of War.
Episode 6 Ghost Dance.

You follow the Wheeler Family across the western Frontier over a few different generations.

I liked the first 4 Episodes the best but there all good and I enjoyed watching the hole series.

Stars
Beau Bridges,Graham Greene, Matthew Modine and Keri Russell.

A must see for the Western movie Fan.
Safe for the hole family to watch.

Enjoy.

The first four episodes were great! But the last two kinda draged a little. But over all it was a good show. The first four make up for the last two.

This movie kept me glued to my chair. I loved it! The characters were so realistic and human, as their weaknesses were just as apparent as their strengths. The history was detailed and we were left with strong emotions recognizing the hardships that were endured and the incrediable courage shown while settling Western America. I am amazed at how far we have come since then.

Enjoyed by the entire family, this is one of the best we have seen.

I have never seen a show that paints such a vivid & accurate history of the white man's plight into the west like this mini-series. For almost my entire life I have studied the old west through travel, books and movies. To understand why this series is so important to us, especially our youth, you must throw aside your preconceived notions of what you have been taught in history class and open your mind to what Spielberg is trying to convey. He is showing us the BIG PICTURE here of the reality of life during these grandeur yet gruesome times and the strong, the greedy and the weak individuals who occupied this timeframe.
Humankind will never again be able to experience the freedom the great west had to offer during that time. Terrible danger & death accompanied such quests for freedom but tremendous progress was made as well... at an extreme price, basically the extinction of the ways of the Native American peoples. I am ashamed for my Anglo race at the way they destroyed what was once beautiful. I also realize that Anglo progress was reality and there was nothing that could stop it.
If you are able and willing I ask that you put yourself in the moccasins of the Native Americans who struggled with the issues of the time when watching this show. Their culture and their ways were (and still are) severely misunderstood by past and modern day Americans. Or try understanding the courage of Jacob Wheeler when he stood morally upright to the comdemning views of public society of the time.
Some of the reviews I read seem to nitpick at some very minor things with this series and I am guessing they failed to see what I saw... a hugely important video portrayal of historical significance. It would take many years of reading books and travelling the west to truly understand what the old west was actually like but this movie is a great window to look through to gain a broad persepective of the times.
Favorite line goes something like this... Jedadiah Smith is talking to Jacob Wheeler on a mountainside and says: "God fashioned man a bit above the beasts and a bit below the angels. The great thing is that you have a choice." We all have free will to make choices and this series does a great job in showing how the choices of all nationalities during the time sculpted the nation we live in today.
I highly recommend this to anyone.

  Edited DVD Release

This excellent TNT series has been severely edited in its DVD release. The only unedited, as telecast, version available is the 6-disk version in the leatherette case with book that was sent to Emmy members. This version is occasionally available on e-Bay. This is the version that is presented as the film makers intended.

  GREAT MOVIE!!!

I bought this movie for my mother and father in law, as they are very interested in Native American history. They absolutely love it! and they believe that it is more accurate at showing how the Indians were treated than any other movie they have seen. I also watched this movie and I too thought it was excellent. It has beautiful scenery but near the end it get's so sad that it's heartbreaking to think of what native Americans went through. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone!

This is a must watch. I rented the series and my 20 yr old son got interested and watched all the disc with me.
I am appalled that our American History has not told these stories of the Actual 1st Americans. Abe Lincoln went down in History as freeing the black slaves while in the west the Army murdered innocent American Indians. I am white and I cried while I watch this movie.....Forgive the ignorant white men.

It is extremely hard to find a gripping motion picture that retains an appropriateness that allows it to be shown in public schools. My students and their parents will love what this series has to offer.

Ok, I am not a huge Western-type movie fan, but this mini series is awesome! Even though it is about nine hours long (12 when run on TV with commercials), you don't want it to end! This is a more (painfully) truthful representation of "how the west was won." The actors are wonderful, and you get really attached to the characters as they age over the generations. I strongly recommend this movie for anyone's collection; although I would watch it in its entirety before allowing children to watch, due to the violence, and some language.

As a Lakota ... I have to admire the accuarcy of the story.
It has been a long time comming.
This film touches both the White world views of the time and the Native side at that point of time. IT IS A TWO THUMBS UP AND A MUST SEE for all audiences.

By my e-bay name you can figure that I'm Native American. A friend of mine from the Blackfoot tribe passed on his dvd for me to view. (8)-hours of movie. After I saw the movie I had to have one of my own. So I purchased it off e-bay. The movie is the best true to form story of the struggles and misconceptions about the colonization of America by the Europeans. It is a LONG movie-but I liked how the film maker/ producers broke it up so that you could have a break and resume to the next segment refreshed. I watched it straight thru the second time--all 8-hours. To my brothers, I would pass it on to them. To those that aren't Native American I would suggest watching to understand the struggles of the indians taken off their land. For historical reasons alone it's worth buying or watching this movie.

  Into The West (2005, DVD)

"Into the West" is comprised of 6 episodes, each following the two families from generation to generation. It hits on some of the important events that shaped the West and the ultimate fate of the Indians: The opening of the West to settlement by the mountain men; the wagon trains across the plains; the building of the transcontinental railroad; etc.

This movie best "finally" portrays the true story of the interaction of out Native Americans with the white settlement, which washes over their land and obliterates their culture. It also shows, in great detail, the tragic events which are too often whitewashed in our history. It does show that not everybody was sure that what was being done was the right thing to do. It seemed to happen fast, when it happened.

I believe that the Native American Indians today still do not get the service they deserve from America. Reservation living is not up to par and it should be addressed. From homes, food, lack of proper utilities, to education, these things still need to be addressed. To me the Native Indians are the most beautiful people on the earth.

Into The West, I purchased because it saved me from driving to a dvd store and having to order it and then going back to pick it up...I wanted this movie because it concerns my native american heritage and I would recommend it to any one that is of native american descent, or has a interest in early american history.
It arrived quickly and the packaging was excellent, I will enjoy it for years to come.

I rented this series from the video store and liked it so much that I dedided to purchase it. I thought it gave such an accurate portrayal of what really happened historically, instead of what I learned in the government school system. They did a beautiful job on this and every american should see it.

Great story and detail to actual history! About two families over a 75 year period. A white family and a Lakota family. Shows the events that happen to the families as individuals during some of the more eventful history of America. Touches the edge of how the white man and the federal government mistreated the tribes and the Indian people. The only part I didn't like is the fact the movie has a lot cut out of it compared to the actual showing on TNT.

Gripping fictional saga spanning 80 years which includes real historical events in the story. The story follows two familys one being outsiders to the land and the other being Native Americans. Wonderful story for any age. I decided to buy because I had watched in when it was presented on TNT and knew I would want to watch again.

Although there are many stories about the west and conquering of Native American tribes, not many portray it as vividly is this production. The awards it received proves that this took some time and thought into making it. Very good piece. A must see movie that will touch your heart.

The packaging was a little messy and I expected to see the packaging in a little bit better shape but the disks were clean and in good shape. I gave it as a present so I'm not sure if it worked or not, but everything seemed fine. Shipping was decent, and it came in a timely manner considering it was close to the holidays. Thank you!

  Into the West DVD collection

This is a great collection of movies. Each one is incredible to watch with a great story line. It really depicts what it must have been like to travel "out west" and claim land that belonged to the Indians. The Indians point of view was heart wrenching and prideful at the same time. The foreigners coming in have a hard journey that is stressful and dangerous. The story is very captivating. I bought this DVD collection for my father in law, because he loves westerns, history and stories about "into the west." I bought the collection when it came out on DVD a few years ago and still love to watch it.
