Album Notes Thompson Twins: Tom Bailey (vocals, guitar, harmonica, synthesizer, programming); Alannah Currie (marimba, xylophone, percussion, background vocals); Joe Leeway (synthesizer, congas, background vocals). 1984's INTO THE GAP is the most commercially successful album by the Thompson Twins; it's also one of their best and most consistent releases. Its predecessor, SIDE KICKS, included a few catchy, danceable pop songs amid the droning, heavy postpunk of the Twins' first two albums. INTO THE GAP, however, was all pop, and contained a handful of irresistible, exquisite singles which were as good as anything on UK or US charts of the time. "Hold Me Now," "Doctor Doctor" and "You Take Me Up" are classics of the MTV era, and unlike many hit singles of the time, don't sound dated. The darker, murkier tracks "Sister of Mercy" and "The Gap" are nearly as good. Alex Sadkin's sparkling production places Tom Bailey's swell pop voice and the quirky vocal talents of Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway in the proper ratio; the arrangements are clever and detailed.
