Album Notes Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Frank Wess (flute, tenor saxophone); Paul Quinchette, Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Bobby Jaspar (tenor saxophone); Pepper Adams, Cecil Payne (baritone saxophone); Idrees Sulieman (trumpet); Webster Young (cornet); Mal Waldrom, Mal Waldron, Red Garland, Tommy Flanagan (piano); Julian Euell, Doug Watkins, Paul Chambers (bass guitar); Ed Thigpen, Jimmy Cobb, Louis Hayes, Art Taylor (drums). This well-appointed five-CD box set features seven albums recorded by the revolutionary saxophonist John Coltrane between 1956 and 1958, including some early collaborations with musicians such as the pianist Mal Waldron, the guitarist Kenny Burrell, and the veteran saxophonist Paul Quinichette, done for the Prestige label. While these recordings are more conservative than Coltrane's later groundbreaking 1960s work, they provide a valuable insight into the effect such major influences as Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis had on his early musical outlook.
