Industry Reviews
YA An introduction to the Internet using Windows 95. Featuring the familiar DK style of graphics, the book explains the topic through a broad overview of general information, hardware and software requirements, and basic steps needed to surf the Net by using either of the two major browsers discussed. Specifically written for novices, the text will not appeal to anyone who has searched the Internet even on a limited basis. However, beginners may find the organized presentation to be helpful. Parts of Windows 95 screens are placed on each page to guide readers through the various steps of each new search skill or procedure. These partial screens are small, require careful study, and do not contain the entire contents of each toolbar or screen. Downloading various files is the major emphasis of the second half of the book. A glossary covers some basic definitions, but the meanings of many of the acronyms are not always apparent until several definitions are read. The four appendixes briefly treat the major on-line services, simple troubleshooting, common file formats, and a listing of Web pages. Suggested as a beginner's point of reference, this title should enable YAs to move quickly on to additional Internet-use texts. Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA
