This is the first King novel I've ever started and lost interest in the beginning. It was months before I started on it again. The beginning is a bit slow, which is unusual for King, and it took a determined effort to get me going again. However, the story certainly was worth the effort. This is another of King's novels which involves the Crimson King, for all you constant readers, and is worth slogging past the beginning to settle in for a lively story.

Here King touches on the unique problems of the elderly, and how they try to cope with all the unpleasant and unpleasant aspects of this time of life. As an insomnia myself, I was entertained by the many remedies to combat insomnia offered to the main character by well-meaning but mostly clueless friends and acquaintences. The insomnia leads to some strange happenings that coincide with other unusual events in the spooky town of Derry (home of Pennywise the Clown from It), and the hero of the day is the elderly gent unable to sleep. Without his intervention, the final Dark Tower book would have been a lot different!

In sum, a great read with a slow beginning, but well worth the effort.

I was rivited at first but I thought it died out towards the middle and my goodness that's a huge book to loose interest in. I think Steve took one too many acid trips when he popped out this one. I read it but it's not one of my favorites.

I love it purely for the fact that it is a Stephen King novel. What made me decide to buy it is the fact that it was a reasonably priced first edition and i only had the U.K edition in my personal bookshelf.

Classic Stephen King! I had read this book when it first came put and had to track it down again. One of my favorites of all time. Just a great read, not horribly scarey but enough to make you wonder...
I love Ralph Roberts one of the best main characters Kings had yet. If you are a Stephen King fan don't miss Insomnia!!

  Won't Keep You Awake...
Review created: 03/23/09

Big fat book--hard to hold--but worth the read. Ralph is a great protagonist, and Lois is a charming Nora Charles to Ralph's Nick.
The story takes a while to come together--don't let that stop you from reading it. You'll like the characters (with a couple of exceptions), and hopefully enjoy the small-town-with-secrets that is Derry, Maine.

On the bad side, alittle wordy, but if you are a King fan you know this already! Awesome book! When refererences where made to the Dark Tower and Roland I thought I'd jump for joy! This is one of Kings classics and best books, but then again I say that about most ofhis books witht he exception of the Cell. That seemed like it was written by someone else! I bought this book because I am a King fan and also because it was a perfect 1st edition! Gotta love ebay for that! But honestly, this was one of his best books. I loved every part even the wordy section!!!!!

Stephen King is 2nd on my list of all time greatest authors ( First is Dean Koontz ), I just wish he could write a book a week, Then I wouldnt have to keep waiting for the next one to come out. Im not going to go into details about the book as if you are like me, I prefer to not know anything untill I start reading about it in the book, I have read most of his books so far and I love them all.
So as you can probably guess from what I wrote above, I highly Recomend this book.

  What a fitting title!
Review created: 08/14/06

Insomnia is one of my favorite books by Stephen King. The title Insomnia is very appropriate! The first time I read it I could not put it down and would read until 2:00 a.m. I finished it in 3 days. The plot is unique and has lots of action. Finally, an original story line and characters that have not been used over and over. I don't want to give anything away but it really makes you think about what life would really be like if you no longer slept for more than 3 hours a day. Ralph and Lois are very likeable and the doctors really make you think. The Crimson King is a truely evil character. Great ending! I would highly recommend to the first time S.K. reader and to those of us who love the classic Stephen King stories. Great book.

I purchased this because it's really hard to find and the price was great even with shipping.

Enjoy!
