Synopsis
Both lovers of books and reading, 11-year-old Meggie and her bookbinder father, Mo, enter the fight of their lives with evil villains who were originally characters in a book called INKHEART. Ensnared by Capricorn and his menacing gang, including the exceedingly cruel Basta, Meggie must not only free herself and her father, but also find her mother, who disappeared years ago. The character Mo was inspired by the appreciation of Cornelia Funke, the author, for the actor Brendan Fraser's work. The bestsellers THE THIEF LORD and DRAGON RIDER were also written by Funke, and this entrancing title is followed by a sequel, INKSPELL.

Twelve-year-old Meggie learns that her father, who repairs and binds books for a living, can "read" fictional characters to life when one of those characters abducts them and tries to force him into service.

Industry Reviews
"Funke takes her time with her tale, investing her situations with palpable menace and limning her characters with acute sensitivity; she creates in Meggie a stalwart heroine who never loses her childish nature even as she works to contain the monster and bring her mother back....a true feast for anyone who has ever been lost in a book."
Kirkus Reviews (09/15/2003)

"Funke once again proves the power of her imagination; readers will be captivated by the chilling and thrilling world she has created here."
Publishers Weekly (07/21/2003)

"The densely written but smooth text is richly descriptive, creating memorable characters and vivid images of the Italian countryside."
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Janice M. Del Negro (03/01/2004)
