Album Notes The Fixx: Cy Curnin (vocals); Jamie West-Oram (guitar); Rupert Greenall (keyboards); Dan K. Brown (bass); Adam Woods (drums). Additional personnel: Rusty Anderson (guitar); Steve MacKinnon, Richard Termini (keyboards); Steve Dubin (drum programming). Recorded at Between The Ears Studio, Douglaston, New York; Summa Studios, Hollywood; Metropolis Studios, London. The Fixx took a three-year break between 1988's CALM ANIMALS and 1991's INK, and the hiatus appears to have done the group a world of good. INK is catchier and more direct than anything the group had done since their artistic and commercial high point, 1983's REACH THE BEACH. Acknowledging that the '80s are in fact over, Rupert Greenall's keyboards are no longer the focal point of the songs. Instead, Jamie West-Oram's atmospheric guitar lines, sounding like a cross between Steve Hackett on early Genesis albums and U2's The Edge circa THE JOSHUA TREE, propel the songs, pushed along by Dan K. Brown's speedily melodic bass lines. Singer Cy Curnin wisely delegates some of the lyrics to outside songwriters, with the result that songs like "All is Fair" and "Make No Plans" actually make linear sense. Surprisingly, for a band so far beyond their commercial peak, INK ain't half bad.
