Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace
I didn't know anything about this guy until I read about his untimely death (suicide) in Rolling Stone and decided to check out his magnum opus. The book is intense and I'm only about 1/3 of the way through it, but the fellows genius was evident to me within the first page or two. Very, very detailed descriptions of mundane things and situations are used to paint a picture of an alternate future. Funny and sad all at the same time. Excellent read, if I can ever get through it (it's 1100+ pages and an exhausting read (and I mean that in a good way.)
