Excellent translation, well annotated
This translation is a pleasure to read. Ciardi decided to pay less attention to preserving the complex rhyme scheme of the Italian and more to the general flow and tone of the poetry. Each Canto is richly annotated, filling in historical context and references relevant to the work, and explaining some of the choices made in the translation of certain passages.
If you're looking for an entertaining bit of fluff to read, pass this over. You'll be better off finding some vintage Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, etc. (all good writers, don't get me wrong). This was apparently the case for some reviewers who were disappointed with Inferno. If you want to see where some of these authors got their ideas and read a classic piece of literature which created numerous icons for Western culture, and are willing to put some work into it, this is a great and very entertaining read.
