Asked to perform on MTV UNPLUGGED, Bruce Springsteen, typically intractable, started out with an unreleased solo acoustic ditty, announced that the unplugged portion of the show was over and called out a full electric band to play the rest of the set. This isn't the E Street Band, but the session band he assembled to tour after releasing HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN in 1992. The set is heavy with songs from those albums--vaguely optimistic tunes about love, babies, and the light of day that waits just around the bend even through the darkest night.
Diehard Springsteen fans will no doubt be put off by the lack of E Streeters, but as compensation they get the first appearance on an album of Springsteen performing "Light Of Day," which he wrote for Joan Jett, and that unreleased opening number, the surprisingly saucy "Red Headed Woman." There are also overhauled versions of the E Street classics "Darkness on The Edge Of Town" and "Thunder Road."

      Unplugged Bruce Springsteen

If you like live performances by this artist, you will love this collection. You can sure tell Bruce was Born In the USA, although that song is not on this CD. Great quality, great price, excellent condition. I bought this for me, not anyone else. An artist I love in an atmosphere I love.

Live Boss minus the E Street Band

    Pros:
Nice compilation of early 90's tunes

    Cons:
Weaker material and performances than we're used to

Springsteen opened up his 1992 concert tour with an appearance on MTV's old "Unplugged" live concert show, from whence comes this CD. Bruce had dumped most of the E-streeters for this tour and only pianist Roy Brittan remained of his former pals; the rest of the band is a bunch of competent but faceless studio musicians. That's OK, because much of the music is a little faceless as well. The CD opens up with an acoustic "Red Haired Woman" and then, ignoring the "unplugged" format, Springsteen goes electric for the rest of the show. The CD assembles most of the better songs from the two rather..

    Pros:
    definitely plugged in

    Cons:
not all of his blockbuster hits are played

How fitting that 2 years ago, Boss's Day as my calendar proclaimed, I walked into my office and graciously received a copy of the Boss's new album. New? Who am I kidding? This concert was already 5 years old and it was just being put on disc as some kind of elaborate marketing ploy... I think. I'll admit I don't understand many such ploys but this is interstellar! At any rate, Bruce is Bruce and it doesn't matter when I get the goods. He has been and still is one of the finest concert draws around the world. More than just intimate and interactive, he provides a pulse-pounding itinerary of...

      Bruce Minus E Street
    Review created: 12/14/00

    Pros:
    live set

    Cons:
half of the songs are newer Bruce

This album, which is part of MTV's unplugged series, is far from that. In fact, only two songs by Bruce, Red-Headed Woman and Thunder Road, are done acoustically. The other eleven songs are Bruce with his new band. Obviously these new guys could never be as good as the original E Street Band, but they try, and they really are not too bad. Bruce offers a wide variety of music, drawing songs from Born to Run through his newest albums. If you are not really a fan of his newer stuff, then you might not want to bother with this album, since half of the songs are new. However, if you are a die-hard.
