Album Notes Contains 3 tracks. Multi-instrumentalist and composer Jim O'Rourke can perhaps be best described as an avant-garde polymath for the post-digital age. While his radical investigations into extended guitar technique and deconstructed chamber pop have bridged 20th-century music traditions from Sonic Youth to Van Dyke Parks to Charles Ives, O'Rourke is less known for his innovations in the field of computer music, specifically his solo laptop performances. Originally released in 2001, I'M HAPPY AND I'M SINGING, AND A 1, 2, 3, 4, presents a sampling of three live performances recorded in New York, Osaka, and Tokyo. Avoiding the canned, playback approach that long besmirched laptop musicians, O'Rourke displays his mastery of organic, off-the-cuff improvisations that build upon, and often rub against, wayward machine repetitions. On "And I'm Singing," what sounds like ticking alarm clocks gradually morphs into a flurry of harmonic patterns whose drunken intervals are only to be interrupted again by the relative calm of electronically processed guitar. Despite its largely digital origins, I'M HAPPY., is a complex, melodically rich, and always texturally beguiling foray into the infinite musical possibilities of the humble laptop computer.
