Idiocracy gives new meaning to the term "dumb comedy."

In 2005, the somewhat dim but kind-hearted Pvt. Joe Bowers (Luke Wilson, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) takes part in a U.S. Army experiment testing out a process for putting people in a state of suspended animation. His companion in the project will be a common streetwalker, Rita (SNL's wonderful Maya Rudolph), whom Joe accepts at her word when she tells him she's an artist and her pimp is her boyfriend. That's the kind of nice guy Joe is. He wants to believe the best in everybody.

Joe and Rita are supposed to sleep for a year, but budget cuts leave the pair forgotten, and instead they wake up in 2505 to discover a United States that has completely lost its way intellectually. Corporate sponsorship has taken over everything, an Ultimate Fighting champion is in the White House, and people are as stupid as they can possibly be--so much so, that Joe has now become the smartest man in the world. Led by his court-appointed "lawyer," Frito (Dax Shepard, Punk'd), Joe goes looking for a time machine, navigating an absurd society and jumping from one fantastically ludicrous frying pan to hilariously ridiculous fire after another.

There's not much more explanation needed than that. Idiocracy is the latest film from Mike Judge, the creator of "Beavis & Butthead" and the director of the comedy classic Office Space, so there's no better man to helm a film about a future overrun by morons. His entire career is built on mining the stupidity of North America for laughs. As with his TV work and his other film, the genius of his technique is the fact that he is able to pull off two levels of entertainment: the straight-up comedy on the surface and the subtle social satire that is underneath. You can watch his programs and laugh a lot, and then when you're done, if you want to think about what Judge is saying about modern man, you can. His approach is almost insidious, the way it hides a message in an amusing wrapper.

Inexplicably, 20th Century Fox has up until this point tried to act like Idiocracy doesn't exist. Though highly anticipated by the legion of Mike Judge fans, this movie never got a proper release. Allegedly, it had a limited roll out last September, but did it play anywhere near you? I know Idiocracy never hit my town. It's a bizarre move, because Idiocracy is really funny. I laughed a lot, which I can't say about most studio comedies I saw this year. Unlike other "bad boy" comedies, like the limp School for Scoundrels, Idiocracy doesn't wuss out either. It maintains its edginess through and through, right up to the hidden scene after the closing credits. Beyond the silly jokes and toilet humor, I even enjoyed some of the wordplay. It actually takes a very smart writer to create dialogue for someone who isn't too bright.

So, rest assured, if there's anyone stupid in the Idiocracy scenario, it's whoever at Fox decided we wouldn't want to see this movie. Together we can show them we're not as dumb as they think we are, and we know a good comedy when we see it.

The Lowest Common Denominator Just Got Lower

Stupid people breed more than smart people. Mike Judge (of Beavis & Butthead and Office Space fame) takes this premise to its logical conclusion in a film about what will happen to humanity when the educated and intelligent all die out.

An army librarian and a hooker are put into stasis in a government experiment, and are forgotten about. They do not awaken until five hundred years later, when a giant garbage mountain has an avalanche, spilling them into a futuristic city where everyone speaks in a sort of hillbilly-hood hybrid of almost-English. They realize quickly that they need to find a way home.

This movie is better social commentary than comedy. The humor is uncomfortable, as this alternate reality does not seem so far distant from our own. Anti-intellectualism and a cult of violence reign supreme, and people interact for sexual purposes only. Not so different from today.

Though the laughs are more for the kids and the truly crass of the world, the educated adults can enjoy watching, too, because someone finally said it. This is where the world is headed - a tyranny of the masses, where professional wrestlers are presidents, and a prostitute can be the second-smartest person in the world!

All teasing aside, I really did enjoy the movie more for the social commentary than for the humor, but it does have some really great moments. The film does not come anywhere near Office Space, but it definitely beats Beavis and Butthead Do America.

Highly recommended.

Director Mike Judge explores the future repercussions suffered by a world that prizes stupidity and the lowest common denominator…. Quite possibly the funniest movie I’ve ever seen! It’s also a very smart, insightful movie. So, lesser reviews shown here seem to be, ironically enough, written by the people that inspired the director to make the movie. Nonetheless, if you’re smart and you want to laugh your head off, watch this movie!!

Kept hearing good things about it. I bought it, and its great! Very funny. Not for kids. An interesting "what if" kind of movie. Let's hear it for Mike Judge. Keep 'em coming. Too bad Last Century Fox pulled its theatrical distribution after one week and never promoted it.

Idiocracy, well worth a look. Don't miss the sight-gags

This is a very under-rated movie. I had passed it by on numerous occasions while at B-buster. Finally, I decided to give it a look-see, noticing that it was a Mike Judge movie (Not diplayed on DVD cover ?). Since I usually like Mr. Judge's endeavors, and am acquainted with an actor who works with him on many projects, I decided to check it out. I was not dissappointed. It was a little bit silly but follows through on its disturbingly on-target premise. There are lots of sight-gags that you'll miss if you're not watching very carefully. My wife and I found it very funny, again albeit a bit silly at times. It's really just a little magnification of what we're living in, and rending toward, today. I don't buy that many DVDs, but this one I liked well enough that I'd like to show it to friends who might keep passing it by in B-buster. Enjoy, and watch carefully for the sight-gags. Overall, I'd rate it 4 of a 5 possible "Knee-slaps".

If you liked Airplane, you'll love this comedy
Review created: 03/03/08

A classic. Could have been done with a bit less profanity, but I can over look that. It's one of those great comedies that you keep seeing new things to laugh at each time you watch it...just like Airplane or The Jerk. Same writer as “Office Space”, but much funnier. Makes me laugh our loud at academia nuts that keep postponing having children.

This film is a hilarious comedy about dysgenics - the genetic deterioration of humanity due to dumber people having more children than smarter ones. An ordinary soldier pops out of an experimental time capsule 500 years in the future, discovering than he is now the smartest person in the world. Very funny sociopolitical commentary with many anti-corporate spoofs.

  perfect title
Review created: 02/15/08

great, really asides from the excessive profanity, i love it,
it's really scary though just to watch this movie after spending any time overnight at a college dorm, how real this outcome may be,
i think they didn't release it in theatres because of how close to home it truly hit,
another thing to enjoy is laughing while nobody else in the room gets the simple irony of everything that goes on

Idiocracy - Mike Judge's best work yet!
Review created: 01/02/08

What I like about the movie "Idiocracy" is that it represents what could possibly, and may already be, happening to our country and our world, unless we act and start putting more emphasis on education and doing more to make things better for society as a whole.

This movie may not be your cup of espresso, as the humor is somewhat crude, rude and socially unacceptable, but, you must remember, this is a Mike Judge product, and Mike, of course, gave us "Beavis & Butthead".

This movie is now somewhat of a cult classic, and I recommend it to anybody who gives a whoopty-doo about our future.

Reminiscent of Beavis and Butthead humor
Review created: 10/06/07

THis movie is a far cry from the ingenius humor of office space, and is more reminiscent of the idiocy of Beavis & Butthead. However, don't act surprised if not a bit dissapointed. The name of the movie speaks to the whole plot, and I would only have wanted to see this movie once. Its not the type of movie to watch over and over, it easily looses any kind of originality or finesse (if existing at all) after the first watch. My best advice: rent, don't buy... unless its dirt cheap (1$ or less)

  A boffo comedy and satire!
Review created: 08/03/07

This is that rare movie that is both funny and brilliant. It is also a little scary when you understand the humorously exposed implications.

Joe, an archetypically average Joe in all respects, is put into suspended animation in an army experiment. He is supposed to come out in one year but instead spends 500 years perfectly preserved and wakes up in the world of 2505. It is a very different, funny and frightening world.

Intelligence is the subject of the story and the different birth rates of intelligent people (low) and stupid people (high) has produced a world where imbecility is the norm and Joe’s average makes him “the smartest man alive.” He is given the job of fixing the problems that a uniformly stupid society would predictably have: starvation, crop failures and of course a moribund economy, always pronounced “ecomony” by the brain dead characters in the film.

The script is rich in word plays and devastating satire and bears watching more than a few times. I bought it so I can watch it at least once a year for the rest of my life.

By the by, this movie is the brain child of the brilliant Mike Judge, who created Beavis and Butthead. Be on the lookout for satire extraordinary, satire in spades and satire that will leave you gasping for air when you watch “Idiocracy!” The sobering up comes when you realize how much of this dystopic prediction is already upon us.

May God save us all from stupid people. But will he?
