When Koontz writes these days, he writes so well that I can’t put the novel down – so I have to begin reading it early in the day if I want to sleep that night.
Unfortunately I was up all night with this one, a very good one - and I started reading far too late.
The Husband by Dean Koontz is a murder/drama/mystery with nothing of the supernatural involved other than the occasional feelings of closeness or dread among the characters.
To not give the plot away, this is an excellent read. I couldn’t put it down. The story is about a middle-income gardener whose wife is kidnapped; the kidnappers’ demand? Two million dollars! Where is a simple gardener to get that kind of money? Then he discovers the secrets – within secrets- within secrets. And his life and the people he admired in his life were never really what he believed them to be. His life – and he – will never be the same.
What follows is a trail of intrigue involving his own family and their many SURPRISING secrets along with a painful delving into his own past - and a reconciliation with that past in order to gain the strength to save his wife.
In light of a SHOCKING betrayal, a trail of self-discovery and recognition of many hard truths, he finds within himself a strength gained from his past as a neglected, abused child that he never dreamed he could have; an ability to fight for what is his own, what he loves and for what he wants to hang onto.
He turns from an ordinary man into almost a ‘super man’, surprising not only himself but everyone around him.
The power of love can do wonders.
