Hunches and Bunches of great words and sights

Dr. Seuss is a genius when it comes to children's literature. This book is about a young man who is bored and cannot decide what to do. So he begins to get hunches which are presented a la characters (Happy Hunch, Real Tough Hunch, etc.) Each comes in a different color and/or pattern, with a large glove for a hat (the gloves point and are quite active in their own glovey way!) I love words, and love when books introduce seldom used words to children; here are a couple from this book: fidget, hunch, fuddled, trot, yapped, ga-fluppted, murky-mooshy, spookish, schlupp, scrapping, bargaining, barg-ued. (I never said that they are all REAL words . . .) Dr. Seuss is A-1 in my book, and as a teacher of teachers of small children, books such as this one are high on my suggestion lists. To read is a great gift, and children who are read to and become excited by colorful and enjoyable books will grow up to be readers, who then will read to their children or students, who will grow up to be readers, and on and on!!!
