The Ultimate In Hackable TiVos
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.
The Hughes SD-DVR40 is one of the original DirecTV "Series 2" hackable TiVo Receivers. The ability to hack it is not for service theft! It is the ease with which you can add additional recording space, put it on your home network, add software to allow multi-room viewing, and web-enable it so you can perform functions from your web browser.
One caution before you buy. Make sure that the receiver is available to be activated by DirecTV before you buy. Ask the seller for the service number and RID (Not all receivers have RIDs). Call DirecTV and tell them that you are going to buy a used receiver and wanted to make sure that it wasn't under contract or has outstanding unpaid charges.
Grab one now because DirecTV has discontinued this and the other TiVo based DVRs. Their current series of DirecTV DVRs is functional, but not hackable like the DirecTV TiVos.
