Faber and Mazlish are amazing, and I have found all of their books to be excellent reads and useful both as a teacher and a parent. However, the skills they present in this book do not differ significantly from their other book, How To Talk So Kids Can Listen..., which presents the skills in a more comprehensive way. Teachers and parents would be better served reading the older book and applying the skills to learning.

How to talk so kids can learn is a must read!
Review created: 12/05/06

I homeschool my child with special needs. Often getting him to cooperate is impossible, leaving learning in the dust. I was tired of fighting with him and turning into a screaming, pleading, crying failure as a teacher and a parent until this book. I learned that how I phrase something and the verbal nuances I use can make all the difference in how my child reacts. He is an explosive child with defiance issues so I needed real help. This book gives that help. It shows in words and pictures the actual "how to" of approaching situations regarding getting the child to cooperate by acknowledging their feelings and asking for their suggestions to solve a problem they have until an agreement can be reached. This book coupled with the book The Explosive Child by Ross Greene and Stuart Ablon can offer the help needed to get through to children.
