How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster (2003, Paperback)

It's got some very interesting anecdotes, and the details and examples it provides are most interesting. It even explains everything, just like it says it will, unlike the usual situation with most books where you've purchased it for it's description only to find that there's a paragraph dedicated to it and the rest is bogus.

A very nice read.

I liked how it gave you a whole new way to read literature. Every chapter had a secret behind the words.

...interested in literature, or eve reading at all. It goes into detail about all the symbolic facets of books, novels, or ever short stories. This book is also an excellent and easy to understand aid when writing books reports or college papers.

Although the title seems trite and boring, the minute you start reading this book ("that milquetoast?"), you will KNOW that it's purely awesome. This book examines so many examples of symbolism, motifs, biblical and non-biblical themes, and, for further interest, "romance". Although it doesn't explore every topic, and although some topics overlap a little (Greek mythology is continuously emphasised), the book is broad enough to cover the most common themes in books we read as high school and college students. The great thing about the book is that whenever a story is mentioned, a concise summary is given, so even though I have not read at least half the stories mentioned, I had a pretty good idea on what Foster is saying.

Foster writes to us as though he is sitting in our room having a nice chat over a cup of tea. He poses the same questions I wonder about. There is no "degrading" or "superior" voice in his writing, as I had expected.

To all students out there who wanna burn this book... don't! Read it!!! It Rocks. At the very most, don't burn it... recycle it!

My son needs this book for AP English class in the fall. It was received in good condition and was priced very reasonably.

I bought this book for a school report and buying it from this user was worth it. The paperback book was brand new and worth the price. I would buy other items from this user again.

If your looking to move into the deep end of literary perspective, plunge into this book. The author is witty, experienced, and constantly entertaining as he explains how to pick out literary elements such as motifs, themes, symbols, narrative styles, etc. I bought the book because I am an English major, and it continues to prove its worth.
