Movie Description Shot on Republic Pictures' poverty row, which afforded director Fritz Lang creative freedom while limiting his budget, this haunting melodrama stars Louis Hayward as Stephen Byrne (DANCE, GIRL, DANCE), a wealthy writer given to bouts of violence and dementia. When his attempts to seduce his wife's maid are rebuffed, he murders her and solicits his brother John's (Lee Bowman) help in disposing of the body in the river. Stephen's wife, Marjorie (Jane Wyatt, BOOMERANG!), is innocent of her husband's activities, while the upstanding John has growing affections for his brother's wife. As the authorities close in, this love triangle moves toward a dramatic face-off by the river's edge.
