Don't miss this sweet, unforgettable book!

The House on Mango Street is one of those books you never forget reading. It is a sweet, sweet wisp of a book. The story is about Esperanza, a girl growing up in the United States in the very poor inner-city. Although some of Esperanza's difficulties are encountered only by those growing up Hispanic, almost all situations can be felt deeply by all who read it. The book is stunningly told with its quirky language and sentiment (in fact, some stories are semi-autobiographical for Cisneros). In addition, it is told in small vignettes, and Esperanza's age jumps around throughout the book. All can relate to the school situations as well as the heartbreaking family ones, and the trials and tribulations of being an awkward teenager is a major theme of the book. Who can't relate to that?

A book for all, but most appreciated by girls, I think. It can be understood on many levels, so could be read up through grades eleven or twelve. Also loved by adults, it will stop your heart.

I had to buy this book for one of my classes but I am glad I did. The writing style is different from anything I have read before and has a more emotional quality to it. I liked viewing the world from Esperanza's perspective and I feel for her.

Great book for hispanics learning English...

Sandra Cisneros really captures the essence of the inmigrant into the states. It's a compilation of short stories that once read, they stay with you forever. Written through a little girl's point of view, you can't help to feel connected with what she's narrating. Whether it brings back memories of your own experience or simply make you feel related, her stories are an uplifting way of looking at where you currently are compared to the first days of personal inmigration. I use this books with my adult students and they love it, they feel the learning experience. Definetely a keeper in your library collection.

A simple little book that will capture you by the heartstrings.
Esperanza Codero, a girl living in the Hispanic district of Chicago, uses poems and stories to express complex ideas about growing up, poverty, and the Latino community. A book full of "esperanza".
Highly recommended.

High school required six summer reading books and this was one of them. Book came promptly and was in the condition advertised. I was surprised how expensive standard shipping was, but still saved over 50% rather than buying it new.

I purchased this book as it is on my book club list for our January meeting. I like to buy the books planned for the entire year, and find ebay an economical way to do this. While I have not read the book yet, I have read others by Sandra Cisneros, and am looking forward to this book.

I love this book! Sandra Cisneros has such an entertaining way of writing, and she creats metaphores in a completely different way! Without TELLING you she SHOWS you what she is writing about, and the journey of savoring her writing is so enjoyable! What a creative mind, and a fun writer. No wonder she's on the top of writer's conference and seminar lists - she is an absolutely brilliant writer.

Review of "The House on Mango Street"

I bought it because it was a requirement for my class. The book has very short chapters, around 2-3 pages the most. Since the chapters are short, I had a hard time understanding the book, and also some chapters does not link to the next chapters, so it's hard to follow.

I had to buy the book for a class and it was in perfect condition when i recieved it but I really did not enjo reading it because i felt it was not appropiate for students to be reading in college, its more for eigth graders, it was not challenging enough. I especially dislike how it was written in a journal like fashion, it felt really chopped up.
