Publisher's Note
A debut novel from an acclaimed young actor follows the story of young William Harding, who unexpectedly finds himself falling for Sarah and, in three short months, feels the joy of first love and the heartache left behind when it ends. 100,000 first printing. Tour.

Industry Reviews
"[A] vastly inconsistent, self-possessed, occasionally poignant tale of young first love....Seeing through William's eyes can often be stirring, but his view is so self-consuming that the novel feels claustrophobic. The other characters...are simply sounding boards for William's egomaniacal snits....When Hawke shows some humility, the self-deprecating humor is appealing and funny, but more often than not, it is cringe-inducing. A harsher editor might have excised some of the self-congratulatory hipster chic, the amateur grammar and the obvious mistakes...."
Washington Post Book World - Jay A. Fernandez (10/06/1996)

"Mr. Hawke does a fine job of showing what it's like to be young, and full of confusion....It's difficult to have much sympathy for William when he's lashing out at the people and objects around him, but in the end we can't help it....'The Hottest State' is ultimately...a sweet love story. It doesn't belabor the Zeitgeist like 'Bright Lights, Big City'; instead, it easily evokes the restlessness of being 21 in the mid-1990s south of 14th Street."
New York Times Book Review - Jen Nessel (11/03/1996)
