Album Notes
Magnapop: Linda Hopper (vocals), Ruthie Morris (guitar), Shannon Mulvaney (bass), David McNair (drums).
Recorded at Pedernales Recording Studio, Austin, Texas in August, 1993.
All songs written by Linda Hopper and Ruthie Morris.
The same jangly, introspective power pop that characterizes many of Bob Mould's records appears on HOT BOXING, Magnapop's new album. Graced with the winning combination of Linda Hopper's intelligent lyrics and Ruthie Morris' ripping guitar, HOT BOXING is a charming, straight-ahead, post-punk record.
Mould's influence in the production is obvious; it seeps in through every crack of the songs and their arrangements. Yet Hopper and Morris are not just rehashing pop's past. They craft edgy melodic hooks that stand above much of today's alternative rock, particularly the bands gaining attention solely for their female leads. Boasting tricky lyrics like, "I can't relax and close the book in my mind," Hopper's Mould-like wariness of the human condition is obvious.
HOT BOXING is a pop fan's record. Starting with an allusion to the Violent Femmes' first record, it's probably that Magnapop weaned itself on the same post-punk pop records that grace the collections of many of today's twentysomething rockers and fans. With HOT BOXING, Magnapop will undoubtedly become a welcome addition to the collection.
