I saw this movie when it was originally released in 1988 - and just loved it. Although I am not male I thought it was interesting to see a view of war seen through the eyes of a young boy. Who would have thought that was could be "fun"?! But, kids see things so differently than we do! And there WERE some very light-hearted moments in it! The characters are interesting and so real - as are their day-to-day struggles. The story just happens to have WWII as its setting.
