This is the first book of Jan Karon's Mitford series. The main characters are introduced and become lovable friends. I especially like Jan Karon's books because they are well-written, kind and entertaining. I also admire her for producing wonderful books without resorting to profanity. Her books are a pleasant oddity in today's often irreverent world.

Need to relax and feel surrounded by friends? Jan Karon’s books can help. As you read this book (and others in the series) and become acquainted with the characters you’ll feel like they are your next door neighbors. The author’s descriptions and dialogue let you feel as though you have become a part of the Mitford community. WARNING – these books can become addictive! A pure joy to read.

The Mitford series is a wonderful hometown story. It makes you wish it were a real place to live. It is a very down to earth, & believable story about an old fashioned town. I highly recommend this book series.

I had heard alot about the Mitford series so I decided to check on ebay and see if book I could find the complete series at a good price and in good condition. I found them and bought them all. I have almost completed the first book "At Home in Mitford" and I love it. It is a book that covers all the gamuts when it comes to emotions. It is funny, sad, tender and everything in between. It also is a Christian filled book, which is what I look for. Books that teach and have a lesson with good morals.

I loved the book and am looking forward to reading the whole series.

One of the best books in one of the best series I've ever read. This book has something for everybody - humor, mystery, faith, family, success, failure, love. This author brings God into our lives in such a way as to make us never want her books to end.

Far more evangelical than the title suggests

You expect a novel about an Episcopal pastor to be Christian in nature, but this is really an "inspirational" tract that will be enjoyed by devout Christians only. The casual reader will likely be put off by the way God's miracles make everything in the lives of the people of this small town not too bad to begin with, and what little troubles they do have disappear through divine intervention. The depiction of small-town life is idyllic and unrealistic.

On the other hand, the book is well written and engaging. Those who share the author's faith should enjoy it very much.

I picked this book on a whim, having never heard or read this author. However, the cover description sounded light and a little old fashioned, which was just what I was in the mood for. This book turned out to be one of the best books I've ever read, and the gateway to a series of books written about the magical place called Mitford and the wonderful cast of characters, starring Father Tim. Without being preachy in the least, all the cast of characters are easy to love and take to heart and the reader comes away having learned the lessons in the stories. For a beautiful heart warming read, this is the book to start with!

I bought this book because my Book Discussion Group was reviewing it. I needed it quickly so that I could read it before our group met. The person that I bought the book from, was tremendously considerate in getting it to me so that I could meet my deadline. The book itself was wonderful; just the kind of pleasant, homey book I love. I now plan to buy the entire Jan Karon series in the future based on that first book in the series.

It was enjoyable getting acquainted with the characters. The more you read, the more you enjoy the book. I have the next four books and expect to enjoy each one. This author and this series was recommended to me from someone who does not read books with sexual, profane or violent content. Quite refreshing.

  Mitford Series By Jan Karon

I am a 72 year old male and my wife of 52 years started purchasing "The Mitford
Series". Knowing how much I enjoyed reading(Action, western and male stuff)She suggested I read Home in Metford Series. You can imagine my initial reaction..
No Way !!but with her steady insistence I started reading the first book.
I was hooked and read all the books...What a pleasant suprise.
I was born and reared in a small southern village and these books take me back in time..So I would recommend to all those "Moncho Types" that you don't know what your are missing by truning up your noses on these books by Jan Koron.

The first of the series of wonderful books.

A friend recommended that I read this, the first of the Mitford books, about two years ago. It is hard to express how good these books can make you feel about life in general. I read this one, and was hooked, could hardly wait until I got the rest of them. I was so excited about what I had found in Mitford, that I passed that set of books on. Later...I was sorry, I wanted to read them again. I borrowed the second reading books. And have just repurchased the set to read the third time. I love Father Tim and all of the folks in Mitford and later, and I hope you will, too.

This Book Leaves You Wanting More!
Review created: 09/08/08

From the first page-I was hooked!
Jan Karon is one of the best writers I have ever read. She brought me into the
small town of Mitford and I didn't want to leave.
This book introduces the reader to the primary characters who will remain with
the following books in the series along with some additions.

It is so refreshing to find a complete series of books so entertaining and also
'clean' to read!
I now have the complete series in hardcover after finding great bargains here
on eBay! I decided this series was what I call "keepers" and wanted the HCDJ
books.

  Light In The Window
Review created: 02/12/08

This is a good book, but as another reviewer said, it's sort of rambling and jumps from one character to another, till you're a little lost. I had tried reading it once before & gave up on it, but I recently bought 3 of the series at a used book store, & loved them, so I ordered all the rest here. This time when I reread the first one, it made sense & I loved it. So if you're finding it a little daunting, keep going, the series is wonderful,& draws you into life in Mitford. I didn't want them to end. I'm glad to know she's writing more in the Father Tim Books.
