Hombre

Never did I expect to really like a Western, at least not before I experienced 'Hombre.' I first saw it when I was a kid and for some reason its moral lessons stayed in my mind, so when I saw it again as an adult it seemed so familiar, and I remembered why I liked it to begin with. And of course, I also love Paul Newman the actor and the philanthropist, so it was easy to feel a real fondness for this movie.
In the movie, Paul plays John Russell, a white man who was raised by Native Americans. When fate throws him together with several stagecoach passengers, they first reject him when they learn of his background but soon come to depend on him for their very survival. Before that moment comes, however, the racist beliefs that some passengers hold force him out of the stagecoach because they don't want to ride with an 'Indian.'
When the time comes, Paul shows that his moral character is far stronger than the character of those who believe they are superior to him just because of who they are. Compared to them, Paul's character of Russell has true courage, and he makes a real sacrifice even after they shunned him.
Diane Cilento (first wife of Sean Connery) is also fine here, playing a strong and fiesty woman who one can imagine would be a perfect wife for Russell if things had been different. And Richard Boone - remember him from the t.v. show 'Have Gun, Will Travel?' Here, he plays a character who is wickedness incarnate, and he more than holds his own. If fact, he was so good that I named my first dog Paladin after him, no matter that it was a female! (she was a great dog and lived 13 human years. She was completely 'dressed' in black just like Paladin.) Also look for an appearance by a young David Canary, who for years has played Adam and Stuart Chandler on the t.v. soap 'All My Children.'
In sum, 'Hombre' leaves us asking the question - would you make a huge sacrifice for the very people who hated, rejected and scorned you? See the movie and think about it.
