The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien (1999, Paperback, Reprint)

The Hobbit is the magnificent beginning to the now popular Lord of the Rings, Trilogy. This book should be read by anyone who loves the fantasy genre, but especially for those that have enjoyed the Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit provides, (with amazingly vivid detail) a stunning desription of Middle-Earth and some of it's history. It also introduces you to Gandolf and Bilbo and how they became friends; as well as the trecherous Golem and the story of how Bilbo came to posess "The Ring". All of this is wrapped into a fantastic adventure that really stands alone from the Lord of the Rings and yet is in my opinion crucial to set up and create the background for the Lord of the Rings.

In summary; you will love this book all by itself with all it's orcs, dwarves, elves, dragon, wizard, hobbits and more. But perhaps you will take even more from it if you already have an appreciation for the Lord of the Rings. You will not be disapointed with this book wheather in hardback or in softcover.

I'm not a big reader but recently I went to Maui with my wife and wanted something good to read. I was a little intimidated by the size of the Lord of the Rings books and wanted something I could finish on my vacation, so I chose "The Hobbit".

What a great read!! I found myself wanting to keep reading and reading and never wanted to put it down. The detail and imagery is great. Having seen the three Lord of The Rings movies made it even more fascinating as I knew who was who in the book as this happens several decades (most likely) before the first Lord of the Rings.

I don't want to spoil it for you but there are several new creatures that come out in this book, which made it all the more exciting and interesting. Those creatues took some imagination on my end, which was a nice change of place in that I already had images in my head for Orcs, Dwarfs, Elfs, Hobbits and Wizards.

Anyways, I can't recommend this book enough for a fairly easy read that you'll have a tough time putting down and can probably finish in a few days.

I have always enjoyed this book everytime I have read it. I can never seem to keep a copy around and when I found out that my GrandDaughter was going to need this for her upcoming school year I jumped on the opportunity for her to have her own copy.

Story is amazing. Once you start the book you can't put it down. Will be a classic forever. A must read for people who have read any of the other books.

A great opening to a great trilogy. It really helps explain what is going on in the LoTR series if you read them before this book. And introduction to one of the most famous fantasy series of all time.

Looking forward to reading The Hobbit. It was one of those books I never got around to reading.
The book is in good condition, with just a little wear. Great for taking around with me as I drive my father (83) around to all his appointmets. The book is a nice compact size and will fit nicely into my cavernous bag.

Good, but a little elementary. Nice change from the Simarillion, though. Ugh, that one was tough. 5 names per every character and place, are you kidding?

You have to like this genre...storyline is classic good v. evil, setting is romantic and idyllic, and the best part is that the story leads into 3 more stories. A great fantasy!
