Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (DVD, 2005, Widescreen)

It's a known fact that the movie adaptation of Hitchhiker's has been up in the air for some years now. Passing from the hands of one director to the next (James Cameron, Spike Jonze and Jay Roach), it wasn't until the idea landed in front of Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith that things truly started to take shape.

Douglas Adams died from a heart attack in 2001, but after reading the books, watching the film and drawing a comparison, it's clear that Adams would've accepted this adaptation of the TV series of the computer game of the radio series wholeheartedly.

Martin Freeman is an inspired choice as the face of Arthur Dent. He's an everyman, his slightly vacant, permanently confused facial expression (which we've all come to recognise from his role in The Office), truly becoming from a man who's trying to make sense of what's Out There, which happens to be similar to, though on a slightly larger scale than what's Down Here. And stupider.

Admittedly, it would've been nice to see more English talent taking on the roles from Adams' well loved creation. Steven Fry is THE Guide, the quintessential voice of logic and good-humoured reasoning in the Universe. Bill Nighy makes a great Slartibartfast, coming across as the kindly, if a little absent minded, genius that I've always imagined. And Alan Rickman providing his nasal drones to Marvin the Paranoid Android worked to near perfection.

That's not to say that the American cast isn't great. Mos Def and Zooey Deschanel are excellent as Ford Prefect and Trillian, but it's obvious that it's Sam Rockwell who's having all the fun, relishing his role as the over-excitable, reminiscently hippie-rockstar Ex-President of the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox.

So all in all, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a great experience. Non-Adamites will love it, as will the die hard fans. It's such a shame that its creator had to bow out before his beloved creation came to life, but due to his input into the movie script (the character Humma Kavula, played by John Malkovich, was written by him especially for the movie), his enthusiasm still lives on.

Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy is one of my favorite movies. I recommend that everyone in the whole world should watch it.

The movie version of Douglas Adams' brilliant sci-fi/fantasy is a great adaptation. Remaining true to the original story, it depicts highlights with fun dialogue and beautiful special FX. The "Guide" is presented wonderfully, and the DVD menus make the Disc a real blast. If you're a fan of the books, you'll enjoy this movie. If you've somehow missed them, see this movie then read the books.

AWESOME MOVIE!! Just like the book. I couldn't believe the detail. It is like an exact movie of the extremely funny book! Excellent movie, and much much better than the original 70's tv series.

I absolutely loved this movie. The opening scene with the narrator setting up the story and the dolphins is worth the price of the film alone.
I had to do research on the film to see if any of the Monty Python troupe was involved because it is the most "MontyPythonesque" movie I have ever seen, other than actual Monty Python films. Maybe the "Brits" just have the special touch with dark, sarcastic, human bashing humor.
I just ordered the book and can't wait to read it because the movie was perfect.
Sam Rockwell made the movie and Alan Rickman did a great job.
By far, the funniest movie I have seen in quite a while.

Douglas Adams is turning over in his grave! After viewing this piece of crap, I was more depressed than Marvin. To be fair, I tried to watch it a second time to be sure I wasn't being over critical. But I couldn't watch more than 1/2 of it before I had to shut it off. The next day I went to three video stores in search of the BBC TV Broadcast version before I found it and rented it. I watched it and all was right with the world again. At least as right as a world where 6 x 9 = 42. Buy the 1981 BBC Television Broadcast version. Read the books. Listen to the tapes of the BBC radio broadcast. But do NOT buy or watch this new POS, unless you are a masochist! I would rather have a dozen root canals WITHOUT Novocaine than to watch this again!!!! All of the computer generated special effects aren't worth spit because they lost the heart of the story.

Movie is worth one viewing and that's it........story is campy....movie production somewhat weak........my opinion is that it's not worth adding to a collection, unless you bought it dirt cheap on E-Bay.

It's truly unforgivable what mediocre film makers can do to a great book. Actors are fine, special effects are dreadful. Fell asleep twice while watching.

i love this movie, it's pure fun and silliness, but still has a plot, developed characters, and some written in messages along the way. it made me laugh harder than a movie has made me laugh in a long time!

I am sure that with months of intelectualization you could come up with some very deep meanings and messages from this film, but... Idon't know why you would try! The truth is this movie is a just good clean mindless fun.
A great break from the powerful messages displayed by people like Shyamalan or Spielberg. This is a movie you can kick back and just enjoy.

Oh... by the way if it does not make sense the first dozen times: I think that is the point!

Sit back, strap in and get ready for some good solis british comedy. Watch carefully though some of it is very subtle!

My husband was really excited about this one-I think he thought he would find out the routes he wanted to take in his space travels (we like space related movies), anyway you have to have a good imagination to enjoy this movie. It was pretty entertaining and funny in a lot of parts, a little scary and a lot bizzare.But it was enjoyable!

This movie is pretty good, not quite as amazing as the book. However, it was worth seeing. Good, clean, fun!

I bought this movie because it is a stupidly, funny movie. It is just one of those movies. It is a great movie also because it has the robot that is constantly depressed, the boring aliens that are horrible at poetry, and just fits. I love the book in the movie that talks and much more. I also like it because it is a movie I will watch consistently. Enjoy.

I had always wanted to see this movie when I saw the previews, but it was quite disappointing. Some typical British humor, which is hard to catch at times. Some interesting characters, but mostly disjointed plot and dialogue.

A great movie for those who have read the book or enjoy British comedy. If you haven't read the book, you might not pick up on everything, but will probably still enjoy the movie. I found this movie to be thousands of times better than the tv series they ran. This may just be my personal opinion but my family and I all love this movie.

I saw the movie when it came out. I liked the technical qualities in it and wanted a copy of it for my library, thus the purchase.
