Synopsis
This crime drama in graphic novel form was made into a 2005 David Cronenberg film of the same title, starring Viggo Mortenson. Tom McKenna, a quiet, gentle family man who runs a small-town diner in Michigan, surprises everyone when he shoots two violent drifters who attempt to a robbery. The resulting--and entirely unwanted--media circus draws three Mafia men to the little diner, who address Tom as "Joey" and threaten revenge for some unspecified past misdeed. What dark and bloody secrets does Tom keep, and how will he respond when those secrets threaten to destroy everyone and everything he loves? The scratchy, realistic-looking, black-and-white art pulls no punches when depicting the violence of the title.
