Dismissed by some reggae purists as a misguided attempt at watered-down pop-reggae, HISTORY MYSTERY AND PROPHECY is one of Lee "Scratch" Perry's most accessible albums. But the disc is in no way a sell-out. By the time of the album's 1984 release, reggae was changing dramatically. A newfound emphasis on synthesizers and drum machines replaced the previously fashionable heavy dub style.
Though Perry never embraced this dancehall style, hints of the new electronic sound appear in HISTORY's opening "Mr. Music" and in "Nice Time," a reworking of a track Perry had produced for Bob Marley over a decade prior. Another highlight is the downright rude "Bed Jamming." Shortly after this release, Perry severed all ties with Island Records, whose Mango subsidiary issued HISTORY. Perry then self-released "Judgment In A Babylon," a Jamaican 12-inch single that accused Island owner Chris Blackwell of being a vampire who had murdered Bob Marley.
