His Girl Friday (2002, DVD)

Movie Description
In Howard Hawks's screwball masterpiece adapted from the stage play THE FRONT PAGE by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, star reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell), once married to suave editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant), plans to leave the stressful newspaper world behind and marry a boring insurance agent. Walter won't reveal his feelings for Hildy but tries to keep her from leaving by convincing her to cover one last story, a politically motivated execution. When the convict manages to escape, chaos breaks loose, and Hildy finds herself working alongside Walter to break the story wide open.

HIS GIRL FRIDAY is a loose, freewheeling gem featuring some of the fastest dialogue ever filmed (peppered with inspired ad-libbing by Grant and Russell, each appearing at comedic high points in their careers). Hawks, who changed the original story of two newspapermen into a battle of the sexes, keeps the frenetic action careening forward and allows a few slim but luminous notes of genuine affection to slip into Hildy and Walter's storm of hilarious verbal barbs, creating a potent and heartfelt classic that stands as one of the most influential comedies ever made.

      His Girl Friday

I love this movie because it was made during an era when Hollywood cared about quality and not shock factor. It is well acted and the script is funny. It goes kindof fast at times, so you have to keep up with the plot, but it is a wonderful movie. The was another version made in the 1980's with Kathleen Turner and Burt Reynolds, but it wasn't as good of a movie. They changed the storyline enough to take away alot of the quality of the the theme of the movie. If you like quality black and white movies, then you will love this movie.

His Girl Friday is His X-Wife
    Review created: 10/21/07

Cary Grant plays Walter Burns, the editor of a major newspaper in this 1940 movie. When the movie opens, his x-wife and best reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) arrives to tell Walter of her impending marriage to Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy). Walter is not happy about losing his best reporter and wife one bit and pulls a rabbit out of a hat to keep her from going.

The rabbit is a big story that is about to break about Earl Williams (John Qualen), a convicted murderer who is about to be executed. Walter talks Hildy into going for the last interview of Williams at the prison and sabotages Baldwin with various tricks that land him in jail 3 times. Hildy does interview Williams, and then he later escapes and ends up in the reporters' room of the prison where Hildy is waiting for her beau. Then, Hildy hides him in a roll-top desk in hope of having another big story. In other words, she still has the passion to be a reporter.

This movie moves entirely too fast, and the dialog is so fast that it is impossible to keep up with. You would have to be a manic personality to enjoy it. In addition, the quality of the playing of this DVD is not real good in spite of the fact that I bought it sealed and brand new. There are no subtitles and no special features.

The movie is based on a famous play by Charles MacArthur called "The Front Page" and has been remade into movies over and over again. This version is not the best in spite of the critics' opinions in the movie books that I have.
