Hewlett Packard Scanjet G4050 Flatbed Scanner

I love this scanner! I had about 200 slides and it worked perfectly and easily to scanned them to a photo, really a money saver. Did an ok job with some old negatives as well. The software is fairly easy to use. I would recommend to anyone wanting to scan old slides, it pays for itself.

This may be a very good document scanner, but I had high hopes for this newer scanner with 4x5 film. The DMax rating is far higher than the amount of detail this scanner is capable of handling. I tested it with 35mm, 120, and 4x5 film, and the results were terrible compared to my Epson scanners. Sharpness was okay, but not great, and the tonal range of the images were awful. I spent quite a lot of time working with settings, but could not get a quality image.

I ended up returning the unit. It's too bad, because HP usually makes such great products.

Liked that it scans film, slides, etc along with pictures. Its colors are amazing. Scans pictures fast and the software provided is exceptional with how it edits the pictures it scanned. It takes old faded picturs and restores them to their original form. The scans from this unit surpass the quality of all the other scanners and all-in-one units that I have compared at the $160.00-$200.00 price range.

I don't like that it takes a few hours to scan a roll of film, if you want it scanned in high quality. I also don't like that it is not an all in one printer/scanner/fax and does not have a feed for scanning several documents, pictures, etc.

The scanner is of superior quality for a good price.

SO FAR I HAVE ONLY USED THE SCANNER FOR COPYING 35MM SLIDES(16 AT A TIME), I DON'T RECOMMEND GOING FOR THE HIGH RESOLUTION, TOO MUCH SPACE ON THE HARD DRIVE AND IT TAKES ALLLLLOOOONNNNG TIME TO COPY JUST ONE, THE LOWER RESOLTIONS 600 TO 1200 IS FINE, GOOD REPRODUCTIONS. I HAVE HAD 4 SCANNERS IN THE PAST AND THIS ONE, FOR THE PRICE IS GREAT, BUY IT, YOU WILL BE HAPPY YOU DID. I AM. I GOT THOUSANDS OF SLIDES TO DO AND THIS SCANNER WILL HELP ME TO COPY AND DO IT FASTER. HAVE NOT TRIED THE NEGATIVES YET OR PHOTOS, BUT I AM SURE THAT THIS SCANNER WILL DO IT'S JOB.

I purchased this scanner to digitize hundreds of slides from my wife's side of the family. I liked the fact that this scanner will scan 16 slides at a time instead of 4-5 like some others. I was able to try my boss' G4050 before buying one and I was sufficiently pleased to purchase one for myself. I have not been disappointed. As many people have stated, this scanner is no speed demon when scanning slides. On the other hand, you can load 16 slides, push the button, and come back 15-20 minutes later to repeat the process. I have been using 300 dpi for the scans and the results are very good. The scanner obviously works best when the slide quality is good (e.g., not too dark, etc.). The HP software has correction options but I haven't found an acceptable fix for underexposed slides yet (too much grain added during correction).

The only other complaint I can think of is the size of the unit--it's rather large. Overall, I'm pleased with the "bang for the buck" provided by this scanner.

Scanner will allow for 16 slides at one time. Software worked fine. Everything works fine even on an older computer.

Excellent, this is a perfect workinh HP do it all scanner. Really nice job on scanning. I can recomend this item to all the people that like to scan nit pictures. The resolution on this item are perfect.

Well in all fareness I should wait to write this but here goes...So far I am pretty disapointed this scanner says it is "Certified windows vista" but all I get is a web site to go to and download a new driver or patch to fix the problem. That sounds great but then you have several to choose from and none of them match what you are told to look for and none I have tried have worked so far... And like I say in all fareness I should have waited till monday when the 24/7 technical support opens back up and see what they can do for me!!! Some how I expect it will be several more hours on the phone doing all the things I have done and in the end still not be able to scan slides... Oh yeah it did scan pictures after the HP CD said it could to set up, Microsoft said it found new hardware and downloaded the driver to make it work... But after trying to download the other software I needed from Microsoft it stopped doing anything!!! Pretty Disapointed so far!

The versatility of this scanner makes it excel. I have a Sony professional film & slide scanner that I use for most of my work, but this one covers the format sizes that are unavailable to the Sony. The resolution is also very good - have had no problems except for the fact there are no drivers for Linux operating system - so have to use it on my Windows box.
