This printer, though very low priced and good quality printing, is a great introduction to the fine world of HP's Smart Chip Technology. This is where the cost of this printer skyrockets. How this works? Each toner cartridge has a tiny little microchip that allows the printer to keep track of every single page you print. Like an invisible thief it counts down until the day comes where the printer will outright disable printing until you replace the toner cartridge. This happens even if the Toner is 1/2 full. That's right, even if you still have toner left in the cartridge you are forced to replace the cartridge. You as the owner of this printer have no power over this printer. Of course HP will argue this protects the toner's integrity and assures that every page you print is a good as the first page, but as an owner of this printer I think it's our call on how we want to print, or if we want to squeeze every bit out of our toner cartridges. Another thing to note, if your Magenta toner has been "locked" and is "empty" by the Printer, this printer becomes COMPLETELY unusable until you replace the toner. So ALWAYS have spare toner on hand. There is no way to print only black and white if your any of your other toner is dead, your printer is dead.
Pros: Good Quality printing, fast printing speed.
Cons: Insane consumable costs, un-environmentally friendly waste of product.
Bottom Line: If money is no object, and you can live with the thought of throwing away 1/2 filled toners and replacing them with $130 replacements many times though out the year, then this is the printer for you.
Hello Everyone! Sikna says: Yes, you can use all your HP Color LaserJet 2550 Series toners. Use the HP ToolBox to change the device settings for toner low and drum low from the default of 20% to the minimum of 1%. This is not mentioned anywhere in the HP guides or manuals. In addition, although you cannot continue to use your own still part-full toners when the chip stops things, you can use part-full toners from another printer. They will not be recognised as HP toner by your printer and two lights will blink. Just press the round, orange button and these toners will be accepted. Furthermore, they will print till they actually run dry - the chip will not stop them. The same is true for the drum cartridge: You cannot use your own when the chip stops it, but you can use a drum from another printer - and the chip will not stop it. You use till it actually begins to show wear. Sikna out...
IHAVE NEVER RECEIVED THIS PURCHASE,ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN PAID FOR FOR QUITE A WHILE. i ALSO HAVE NEVER HEARD FROM THE SELLER. i SENT A MESSAGE TO E BAY 2 OR MORE WEEKS AGO, AND HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM THEM AS WELL. R. CONN
Great printing quality but slugish when printing a large file...wanted to print a picture of my son and when clicked to print, it took just about 1 minute to process and start printing. You will definately need to upgrade the printer's memory if you want it to print faster...I have done that and it now takes roughly 15-20 seconds to print my 8MP pictures. Other than that, it is a good entry level printer. I could not resist the great deal on eBay: 160.00 for this printer that only had 1100 pages printed...drum and cartridges are supposed to last 5000 pages...I now have a page count of 1190 and black cartridge sits at 53% and all 3 cartridges are at around 72%, drum is at 73%...I don't print much so I will have printer for a long time. The HP Toolbox for this printer is simply amazing: you can tweak and troubleshoot as you please. Great for entry level...for office or professional use, you better get the newers ones. Thanks
the printer is useless.... is broken and needs tonner, cannot be used as spare because is all broken..... will never make a purshase to this seller....
Love it. I needed to purcase a laserjet a long time ago and was shopping around and i was going about purchasing one all wrong. I love shopping with ebay and decided to big on one that best met my needs and found it. I love my printer and i also love the fact that the seller offered a warranty for this printer. I truly love ebay because it saved me a ton of money and my item works just fine.
A replacement smart chips is $10.00, a replacement toner cartridge is at least $50.00 ($130.00 at staples). Do the math. A new smart chip get you from 2000 to 3000 more pages. Same thing for the imaging drum ... there are smart chips available for about $10.00 each.
I agree with others regarding operating costs - exorbitant. If you require an actual paper tray (other than the pull down door) it (they) will cost extra. You cannot have a large capacity tray (500 sheet) without also purchasing the smaller 250 sheet tray. They stack and the large one will only stack under the small one. This info is not mentioned in any literature I read. Not cost effective for small business use. Not sure what use would be cost effective, but the same quality output as other HP LJ printers.
