I would like to say THE reference but I know that they are Pro TI & Pro HP users then I don't want to initiate the usual polemic :)

Anyway, this calculator is wonderful, you will find a huge amount of programs on Internet and I am sure that you will find the one suitable for your needs and activity.

This calculator still belongs to the HP glory's day. What I want to say that its construction is rock solid.

There are 3 different models:
- HP-48G : With 32Kb memory and no expansion slot,
- HP-48G+ : With 128Kb memory and no expansion slot,
- HP-48GX : With 128Kb memory and 2 expension slots.

You can find 2 versions of this calculator differentiated by the display. One version shows a blue writting on green display, the other shows a black writting on yellow display.

The 2 expansion slots can receive additional memory expansion cards or applications cards.

The 48 series has a built-in infrared communication system to exchange datas with other calculators or to access a HP82240A/B infrared thermal printer.

This series is the dign successor of the 48S & 48SX that initiated this generation of RPL (its programming language) calculators.

It is not necessary to put a lot of money on this calculator because it is a very common model that can be found used around $120 maximum with a pouch, the owner's manual and the quick reference guide if you want to take the time.

  DOWNSIDE TO EBAY
Review created: 04/06/07
9 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I BID ON AND WON THE ITEM I WAS LOOKING FOR ON EBAY. THE SELLER STATED THAT THEY WANTED TO BE PAYED WITH A MONEY ORDER OR CASHIERS CHECK. I WAS UNCOMFORTABLE AND CONTACTED EBAY TO EXPRESS MY CONCERNS. EBAY RESPONDED THAT BECAUSE I HAD WON THE BID, I WAS OBLIGATED TO SEND MY MONEY AND SO I DID. I HAVE NOT TO DATE RECEIVED ANYTHING FROM THE SELLER AND WHEN I CONTACTED EBAY, THEY SAID THAT I SHOULD TAKE IT UP WITH A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY THAT CARED EVEN LESS THAN THEY DID. WHILE I HAVE HAD MANY PLEASENT PURCHASING EXPERIENCES ON EBAY, I HAVE FOUND THAT WHEN THINGS DON'T WORK OUT, EBAY IS NOT THE LEAST BIT INTERESTED IN GETTING INVOLVED.

Last of the great RPN calcs!
Review created: 04/03/08
by:

This is the last really great HP calc that is pure RPN. I've been a fan of RPN since my first HP (a 35) in 1974, and dislike any other interface format for a handheld device. Sure, the newer HPs (HP 49g, 49g+, 50g) have slightly more capability, but the 48gx has at least as much capability as most scientific and engineering professionals would ever use. Fortunately, these newer models also have RPN, as well as algebraic interface options, but they lack the big "Enter" key that we RPN fans have come to love.

If you've never tried it, get an HP with RPN capability and use it (in RPN mode, if there's also an algebraic option) for a week. You're almost certain to be converted by RPN's efficiency and ease of use. If you're fortunate enough to find a 48gx at a reasonable price, you'll soon be hooked on that big "Enter" key that seems to be located in exactly the right place!

This calculator is a must have for engineers. However, one should understand that to take full advantage one has to learn how to use it. The best time to learn to do this is to when you are in school where you can use it to solve the toughest problems you will ever face. Such as solving electrical circuits using the matrix function and polar quardinates. This can solve the problem with practically writing nothing down, without you would spend a long time iterating. Another good time is when you are practicing for you EIT or professional engineering license. Other than that, in the professional world, with the many software programs, spreadsheets, and other things, you probably wont use it to its full extent. But once you do you will never want to be without. All you HP users know what I am talking about. So in short, it you have the time and are forced to learn, get it. If you are new to the HP world and the 48 series, you may want to look at cheaper option, unless your rich then go for it and learn at your own pace.

The HP 48GX is by far the best calculator ever made. HP has a great line of calculators but this one is bar none the best.

If your concidering a TI over a HP think again. You'll be sorry with a Texas Instrument!!!

My Experience with the 48GX by HP
Review created: 01/07/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In March of 2007, my vehicle was broken into and my 48GX was stolen. I had owned it since they first came on the market. Originally, I had an HP 11c which I had pruchased new. It ceased to work and I sent it to HP for repair. They said that they no longer made or repaired 11c's and would accept the 11c in trade on a new 48GX. That pretty much is the story.

When my 48GX was stolen in 2007, and no longer being serviced nor sold by HP, I turned to EBAY. Along with the calculator, a memory card, a cogo card, and a survey card was also in the case. I was able to turn all items into my insurance company and to replace them thru EBAY. I have been a practicing Civil Engineer for the last 42 years and the 48GX was like an old friend.

The item I received on EBAY was not in the same condition as my original calculator, however, it worked just as well. I like the service of EBAY.

  HP 48G
Review created: 01/03/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought a used HP48G to supplement my HP28S. The 48G is faster than the 28S and can be repaired by an independent online service if it fails. The 28S is not repairable. The 48G is used at work (engineering) as I still prefer to work from a paper notebook using a calculator.

There is a wealth of application info for the 48 series on the web and the purchase price was reasonable (less than $70).

In the past Ive always wanted a 48G but could not justify the price given that the 28S met my needs. Now the price was right and I am very happy with my new(used) calculator.

Review of purchase thru E-Bay and quality of product.
Review created: 12/13/07
by:

The HP48gx is a wonderful calculator used in my field of work. I have expensive program cards I use in it. HP recently quit making them. I have had 6 of them over the years and needed to get a new one to replace an old one. The calculator was in brand new shape. It arrived packaged well and in a timely fashion. I have had some very successful purchases thru E-Bay from some international sellers. It is a very attractive way to obtain difficult to find products that I am familiar with instead of up grading and spending alot of time learning a new system.

This is the best Engineering calculator ever created hands down!!! HP should be ashamed of themselves for discontinuing this rock solid product. Obviously anything that requires true craftsmanship has been nixed for cheaper Chinese products.

High power scientific calculator essential for engineer
Review created: 12/05/07
by:

This calculator is generally considered the most powerful handheld computer ever made. Its 300+ built-in functions and equations plus expandable applications and memory make it the calculator of choice for us engineers. With its addable function cards its power is virtually unlimited. Programming is very challenging for non-engineers not for the feint of heart.

HP 48GX Graphic Calculator: An old Friend
Review created: 10/03/07
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I recently and forutnately won the bid for a replacement HP 48GX Calculator. I misplaced the unit I owned for approximately 12 years. After purchasing a newer TI unit, I found myself having to practicaly learn a new concept. While simoultaneously attending a Differential Equations course at school, I just did have the necessary time to learn a new machine. Upon, reaching a peak of frustration, I decided to search for a replacement. I found one here on eBay, bid on it, and won it. I understand the functions of the HP and became the proverbial "creature of habit". I now have and am in full use of the HP for my courses. I have been reacquainted and rely on my Old Friend.

It's a great calculator for advanced math applications. One of the great features is the ability to stack the input figures for clarity. Also, the rpn feature becomes standard once you are accustomed to it, second nature. This particular calculator has been replaced with the 48gx, I believe, which is not as user friendly for my applications. I think hp should reconsider bringing this model back. It is an overall great calculator for almost any engineering/ scientific related equation as well as simple math computation.

Stuck in the Mud Surveyor's Standard

For nearly thirty years I've relied on Hewlett Packard calculators and I've loved every one. For me, Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett were to the "best generation" as Paul Allen and Bill Gates are to theirs. Times have changed; new (and vastly more expensive) products have come along, but since the HP calculator has always been the brains of my operation, I'm going to try to keep it that way.

My first purchase on ebay and it was fantastic. The item arrived much sooner than I had expected and in near mint condition. Better than the seller had described it. Much better than the one I am replacing it with. Great communication from the seller. Highly recommend seller and look forward to future purchases off of ebay.

Thank,
