  Hewlett-Packard HP-33S Scientific calculator

This calculator is the successor of the well known HP-32SII which was an evolution of the famous HP-32S.

Compared to the HP-32S, the HP-32SII added algebraic, math and fractions support. The production of the HP-32SII stopped in 2002 and the HP-33S came out in 2003.

The HP-33S is not a real HP calculator, it belongs to those implemented by Kinpo (one of HP's OEM). The memory has been increased to 32Kb compared to the HP-32SII.

I would have prefered a more conventional and nicer keypad.

Sincerly, except if you just look at the pure performances and features, I would recommend you a HP-32SII. If you have more money or accept to buy a second hand calculator, check at the HP-48G, HP-48G+ and HP-48GX family. You will not be disappointed.

I bought this calculator on september 14 to take the engineering exam as I needed for october 24. My complaints are that the item arrives late (october 10) and the shipment cost was too high ($14.95) from Texas to Puerto Rico. Affortunately item finally arrives as described by seller.

Fine Calculator - Worth Learning How to Use
Review created: 10/17/09
by:

I need the calculator for an upcoming exam, in which the utilties are said to be superior. Overall, this is a powerful, programable unit. My only hangup is the odd-ball way in which it processes angls in Deg_Min_Sec. It interprets such data as though it was TIME. Other than that, I expect a dandy life of powerful usage out of it.

I love the RPN and can be changed back to normal. The metric conversions are very helpful. I am an engineer and I have always used the HP's with RPN. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a scientific calculator.

Powerful calculator. Too bad it needs special batteries
Review created: 10/03/09

I like the wide range of functions, mathematical and basic statistics. The stack is a little shallow with only 4 levels. I wish it could do complex math better (i.e. multiplication and division of real and imaginary numbers)I really don't like the fact that it takes 2 special batteries. Nothing like needing your calculator and having to find a store that carries this particular size. Oh, sure I could carry spares around but why could the geniuses at HP figure out how to power this with 1 AAA cell, ever heard of a DC/DC converter? Not to mention that the little batteries are expensive!

  Very good calculator

I got this calculator for the PE exam. I really had no choice but now I like it a lot. It is very good, easy to use and I like to have the choice of RPN and algebraic data-entry modes. I still prefer my old HP 50g but unfortunately I can't use that one on the PE exam.

  NEW HP RPN Calculator
Review created: 09/16/08
by:

For all us older engineer types who can not us a regular calculatot HP has at last made a new RPN calculator that can also be converted to TI format (=). The enter and pi key where relocated, which takes a little geting used to, but all in all it is an execelent Calculator that does not cost an arm and a leg and is not 20 years old.

  Powerful Scientific Calculator
Review created: 06/25/08

I highly recomend the HP 33s! This has all the functions you may ever need, with a choice of RPN or Algebraic type entry. Keys have the great HP "feel" and the two line display helps the user during operation. Easy to navigate between menus and settings.

  HP 33s Scientific Calculator
Review created: 04/09/08

Love this calculator; I originally got it to take for the FE exam, but it's one that i'm going to keep. It has all the funcionality one would need except having the graphing capability. It's nice being able to switch from Reverse Polar Notation to normal and vice versa. nice display. compact design.

  HP 35S Calculator
Review created: 01/02/08
by:

A culmination, of sorts, of all previous mid-level HP calculators - released to commemrorate the introduction of the 'original' HP-35. All the functionality of the HP-33, without the funky 'chicklet' keys and 'spaced-out' appearance; and with additional indirect programming. Both RPN-mode and ALGEBRAIC-mode capable. it would appear to serve the needs of most anyone up to and including graduate-level biology-chemistry-geology-engineer types - it may soon be approved for use on the Professional Engineering Exam - as is the Hp-33.

Do I like all of its functions? Well, no, I still think a dedicated Rectangular/Polar conversion would be more useful than having a 'mode-display shift', and key placement is taking a while to get accustomed to.

Is the calculator immediately useful? Yes! I am used to the Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), having used it since 1975, but an Algebraic mode is available as well for those willing to put up with multiple parentheses. I *DO* wish the manual was available as a RPN-Only or ALG-Only, so all examples would be more useable. And I'd like it if the manual would go into more detail about some items (although on-line help on a variety of subjects is available at the HP site).

The ability to write an EQUATION and have the calculator prompt for inputs (even in programming mode) is great, and the SOLVE function makes short work of various complex problems.

The ARRAY functions and complex-number arithmetic capabilities are Outstanding, and are fully programmable - enter an array [ppp, qqq, rrr], another [sss, ttt, uuu] and instantly find Dot-product or other vector manipulations. Enter complex-number arrays [nnnieee, mmmiddd, llliccc] and calculate with them!

The Unit Conversions are more than just basic Kg-Lb, C-F, Km-Mi, etcetera; there is a fairly complete library of basic physical and mathematical constants (which apparently may NOT be added to) and which may be easily entered in formulas or recalled for use.

The Statistics functions are useful and complete, giving of: SX, SY, SXY, Sx^2, SY^2, and n (Where Sum = (S)).

The four-level 'program-stack' makes it easy to get and use intermediate solutions (at least in RPN mode) without having to store and recall intermediate answers.

Programming appears to be straight-forward, with memories A through Z available for programs, and indirect addressing to expand this functionality (I am still investigating this aspect).

What it Does Not do: Well, it IS NOT a graphic calculator. But then, do you really NEED a graphics calculator for basic (or even advanced) everyday use? Maybe not. The size and weight of the HP-35 lends itself well to having it available almost everywhere.

The zippered fully-protective case is well thought-out, and appears to be durable and functional.

Personally, I find the key layout (functional grouping) and key construction to be far better than other competing calculators. The functions are internally consistent, in that Sin(nn) is (in RPN mode): nn Sin, and Y^X is always nn rr 'Y^X' not sometimes the function then the argument while other times the argument Then the function: the calculation methodology is always the same.

I find the calculator to be an excellent bargain for the money.

'Wish-List': What I would *REALLY* like would be just a little Mini-USB in/out port so programs could be loaded without having to key everything in (and maybe Printed as well).

The HP 33s is now one of the few calculators allowed for use in many exams.
It is a usefull calculator but a bit hard to use and program. I bought this one as a back-up for use on my upcomming exam. The use and storage function on the equition list on this machine is also very handy.

Hewlett Packard HP 33s Scientific Calculator
Review created: 07/06/07
by:

The HP 32S was my all-time favorite calculator but is no longer available. My fleet of 32S's (I have 3 of them) were all going senile due to flaky keys, so I needed replacements. Much to my chagrin, I found that used 32S calculators were expensive and NIB ones were exorbitant. I tried the 33S as a replacement and I'm happy with it. The only change that took a little getting used to is they (HP) moved the enter key.

  Good but could be better.
Review created: 06/06/07

This is the top usable calculator for the ncees pe and fe exam. Programming loops are not very easy but is better than nothing. Solving function is the best available for the calculator allowable in ncees exam. There is a lot of room for improvement that should include a larger matrix capabilities and table functions.

For ncees list is the best!

Great RPN calculator for the PE
Review created: 04/25/07

I recently used this for my PE exam and it served its purpose very well. My brain simply doesn't work in algebraic anymore, so I had to get this RPN calculator. You'll want to get this before you start your studies so you can get used to the location of all the keys and beware that this only hold 4 rows in the stack. Anything above that is nixed. It's also more of a pain to clear all the stacks.... I had to just enter "0" and then hit Enter 4 times to do it quickly. My last gripe is that it doesn't use AAA batteries, but I did find them readily available at the battery center at walmart for pretty cheap. I'm debating on whether to keep it or go back to my 48G.... I'll see what that PE score is first ;) If you're PE bound... good luck!

These things are pile O'. The display is unreadable and the keyboard is horrible but what are your other choices?

The 32S was Sooo much better except for the crappy buttons that are guaranteed to fail eventually. At least these are cheap enough to throw away regularly.

Common HP - you can do better than this.

This calculator is complete. With it you can improve solving problems in the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, faster than you normally do. Recommend it with my eyes closed. If you can add programs to it, you don't need anything else.
