Cobb, Jerry Shook (guitar); Ralph Mooney (steel guitar); The "A" Strings; Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Ace Cannon, Wayne Jackson, Dennis Good (horns); Bobby Emmons, Bobby Wood, Larry Butler (keyboards); Mike Lech, Jimmy Tittle (bass); Gene Chrisman (drums); Rick Yancey, Danny Hogan (background vocals). Strings and horns arranged by Mike Leech. Recorded at Moman's Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee from December 4, 1984 thru May 23, 1985. In the mid-1980s, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson teamed to form the "outlaw" supergroup The Highwaymen. Their self-titled 1985 debut album was a huge hit, and not surprisingly the four stars made several efforts, alone and together, to repeat their success. HEROES is one such attempt, reuniting the two Highwaymen with middle-of-the-road Nashville producer Chips Moman and his stable of top-flight studio musicians. The album contains one top 40 country hit-- a cover of Rodney Crowell's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues"--as well as appealing versions of Tom T. Hall's "The Ballad of Forty Dollars" and Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings." Also included are the surefire crowd-pleasers "Folks Out on the Road," which is a tribute to country music fans, and "American By Birth," in which Johnny and Waylon proclaim themselves "American by birth and Southern by the grace of God."
