Album Notes On their 2008 sophomore outing, HERE WE STAND, the Fratellis offer up another exuberant round of glam/punk-inspired Britpop. Like COSTELLO MUSIC, its well-received predecessor, STAND presents its melodies with gleeful energy, even though it lacks the full-on punch of the former record. In both his voice and his six-string playing, singer/guitarist Jon Fratelli (aka John Lawler) often recalls Oasis songsmith Noel Gallagher (rather than his frontman brother, Liam), making it no surprise that this Scottish band is warmly embraced in the U.K. While no tunes on HERE WE STAND quite live up to COSTELLO's uber-catchy singles "Flathead" and "Chelsea Dagger," the Beatlesque "Mistress Mabel" makes an admirable attempt, and other tracks aim to broaden the group's horizons ever so slightly (see the wistful "Milk & Money").
Editorial Reviews From the honky tonk piano of comeback single 'Mistress Mable' to the sun-setting psychedelic strum of 'Stragglers Moon', this is a band steeped in musical history... Clash
4 stars out of 5 -- [W]ith added vaudeville, a winning penchant for a surreal story...[and] whopping, arena-roof-raising choruses. Q
STAND is full of catchy, straightforward garage rave-ups....Given frontman Jon Fratelli's swaggering way with a tune and his bandmates' swinging accompaniment, this stuff certainly satisfies... Entertainment Weekly
3 stars out of 5 -- [The songs] pack stellar bar-rock hooks and big, memorable choruses... Rolling Stone
