Somewhere during his many solo recordings, left-field guitarist Adrian Belew underwent a dramatic transformation from off-kilter avant-rocker to pure pop craftsman. With the albums MR. MUSIC HEAD and YOUNG LIONS, Belew began to combine the eccentric sensibility that marked his work with King Crimson, Talking Heads and David Bowie with a much more streamlined, yet lighthearted, grasp of hook-filled song structure. HERE shows Belew settling comfortably into his role as popmeister, without any diminution to his status as a musical adventurer and a technical wizard.
There's evidence of the intricate instrumental soundscapes of Belew's earlier axe-slinging days on cuts such as "Postcard From Holland" and "Fly," but dreamy, psychedelic singalongs evoking the Beatles, XTC, and Todd Rundgren predominate. "I See You," "Never Enough," and the soaring McCartney-esque melodies of "Peace on Earth" and "Futurevision" prove Belew has earned his stripes as a tunesmith. As always, the record is a technical tour de force, with Belew composing, arranging, producing and playing all the instruments. HERE is another strong effort by this impressive musical figure.
