I can't say enough good things about this book! Reading it is like sitting down and talking to old friends. I grew up in the 50's and 60's in Alabama so I can totally relate to these characters. May Mobley reminded me of myself as a child with an older, wonderful black lady whose name was Nettie. She has been gone to her reward many years, but I can still feel her love, care and protection from a rather critical mother much like in the book. If you have the chance to pick up the book, I promise you will not be disappointed!!

A fantastic read. I didn't want it to end. The characters were beautifully written. Not like any story I have ever read before.

  The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Review created: 12/07/09

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step into the world of 1960s racism.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women--mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends--view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

How can people be such snots? Really portrays how black maids were abused and white society folks thought they were so much better. Wasn't impressed with the ending but overall an excellent book.

Good hook..you don't know what to expect

I read this book for my book club...Quick read...really holds you. I learned a lot about life in Mississippi that I didn't know, and I actually lived through that time period! My group found you could almost identify yourself as one of the characters...they are so clearly depicted you can actually hear their voices. Definitely worth reading.

The subject was a very touching one. Writing in the black dialect made me get into the characters. I was sorry when the story ended.

This is a MUST, especially for anyone growing up in the south during the 1960s. You will fall in love with some of the characters and be loathe to see the book end. It is that good.

The Help - A fantastic book!
Review created: 11/17/09

I just can't put this book down! Since I was born and raised in Jackson, MS it is a book that really does describe how it was in the 60's. You are so involved in all the character's lives and as I said before, I have almost finished it as I can't seem to put it down long enough to do anything else.

It was a book club selection. Wonderfully written, takes the reader into the story. Truly believable for the era. Regrettable period in our country's history.

I really liked this book. For a first novel it is very well written and the author did a great job of keeping you interested in the characters. The only problem is I want one of those caramel cakes...

  Help - great book
Review created: 11/05/09

Easy to read and well written and about an interesting topic. More people will enjoy in whan it comes out in paperback. It is a large book and hard to lug aroubd. The characters that are described in the book are very real and it almost seems like nonfiction. It is difficult to remember that the book is historical fictrion. I purchased it on ebay because the store price was twenty seven dollars. After I finished the book, I passed it around so others could also enjoy it and then I gave it to the library

EXCELLENT BOOK THAT GRABS YOU FROM THE FIRST PAGE

If you want to know how relationships were between the upper white class and their black help in the late 1940's - 1950's then this book is a must-read. You will understand the deep emotions that only occasionally surface in these relationships. I found this book to be of significance in the history of the African American in the South. Well done!

I bought this book for Book Club. We read a variety of books and this was one of my favorites. I read it at the beach in 4 days. It has short chapters so it keeps you turning the pages. The book has everything. It's funny, suspenseful, and thought inspiring. I highly recommend it.

I had heard good things about this book and I am finding that I cannot put it down. Written from the perspective of "the help" in the 1960's, it's impossible to imagine that this was recent history. This book should be required reading in high school.
