Synopsis
Postmodern Russian author Victor Pelevin relocates the myth of the minotaur and the labyrinth into a computer chatroom where various typists such as Organizm(-: and Monstradamus attempt to discover the secrets of their virtual prison. Meanwhile, in the real world, the characters are all confined in cells where everything is marked with the insignia of an asterisk. Theories are offered, hints are dropped, and the characters desperately seek to free themselves from the controlling machine known as the helmet of horror. Part of the Canongate Myth Series launched in 2005, THE HELMET OF HORROR is a nightmarish, erudite, and frequently funny novel that proposes that we are all lost in a maze of technology, pursued and imprisoned by mysterious forces, trapped in a futile search for communication and love.
