To Hell and Back is one of the best WWII films available. It portrays the heroic deeds of America's most decorated WWII Hero - Audy Murphy. The movie stars Audy Murphy and begins with his childhood. It then progresses through his growing up and joining the U.S. Army in order to fight against America's enemy - the Nazi's. The majority of the film is about Audy Murphy's war time exploits which brought him to the battle that won him the Congressional Medal of Honor. The film has human interest, a little love interest and plenty of combat action. This is a film for the WWII enthusiast, one who would like to see a real American Hero and can be shown to the entire family. A five out of five!

  Excellent History of Audie Murphy

I grew up watching Audie Murphy westerns.

This movie is about how he made it through WWII and became the most highly decorated soldier of that war.

The movie is well written, and Audie gives a great portrayal of himself, without being too cornball about it.

Recommended for war movie buffs, or Audie Murphy Fans!

Michael

  War never changes

I bought this DVD for my husband's birthday. He is an Audie Murphy fan, and had seen the film before. It's hard to believe anyone could watch the depiction of what this young actor/soldier endured during wartime and not be touched by his courage and strength of character. I wish our present America could remember the sacrifice our young people make in serving our country in this way. I would encourage families to watch this film. I don't think the war scenes are as graphic as some of the cartoons we have today. Perhaps by having a father, husband, uncle, and 2 cousins who have served in the military, I watch movies like To Hell and Back with more interest and respect. God bless America and her troops even today.

This is the biographical story of Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War II and one of the most heroic figures in all of American history. Being small in stature, baby-faced and only 17 years old, he was turned down by the Navy and the Marines before finally enlisting into the Army. Even then his superiors tried to give him cushy, rear-echelon jobs for fear that he might get hurt. He turned them down and went to the front. Little did they know.....

Despite the "squeeky clean" movie code of the 1950's, this is a convincing depiction of Audie Murphy's exploits as an American G.I. across Europe. They had to say, "I hope you get shot in the can." Instead of the "A" word, which is what was really said.

In my opinion, Audie Murphy was a hero in every sense of the word; not just in his death-defying stunts against enemy odds, but even from his self-induced family reponsiblities back in Texas to the protection of the men in his command.

If you're into epic heroism, this is a must-see movie. I give it 5 stars.

  What is a hero?
Review created: 12/05/09

I teach U.S. and Texas history and I have my students compile a "Hero" file. To illustrate what a hero is, I use "To Hell and Back," a movie about Audie Murphy with Audie Murphy playing the title and starring role. I tell them that a football player is not a hero, neither is a basketball player, nor a baseball player. A hero is someone who risks his/her life to benefit others. 5 foot 5, 110 pound, Audie Murphy is the perfect example. Then we go into other examples, like firemen and police officers. By the time class is over, everyone understands on a personal level exactly what a hero is and is not. Most celebrities do not measure up to that level.

  Good, but not "Patton" good
Review created: 11/19/09
by:

Having read about Audie Murphy's exploits in WW2, I was excited to be able to see a film depicting some of the stories I had read. I did enjoy watching the film, but I was a little disappointed in the fact that it seemed to be too "hollywood" in its portrayal of his life. The film could have cut out some of the cheesy "it's not so bad" moments, but i do understand the era in which it was made too. My only comparison at this time is to Patton, which seemed to give a less glamorous and more realistic account of events surrounding Patton in WW2.

I believe that Murphy's exploits would make for an excellent remake, and that a director in today's hollywood could have a lot of fun recreating the stories that I have heard and read about it - and give it the sufficient realism that is found in war.

  Amazing hero, so-so acting
Review created: 09/04/09

I bought this movie after reading Audie Murphy's autobiography by the same title, as I wanted to see the reenactment of his war career. For some reason, both in the book and in the movie, names of his fellow soldiers were changed. I could live with that, although I've never understood it. The acting job, while acceptable, made my wife snicker as she listened to the movie from the other room, which accounts for the average rating. I can't say that this movie will be one that I will watch over and over, but I will say this: Audie Murphy's war story is one that should be retold, especially these days when patriotism is often ridiculed. He did what he did because he believed in his country, and his story should be used to inspire young people to care about something larger than just their own wants and needs. I recommend it for this reason.

BEST MOVIE EVER "TO HELL AND BACK"
Review created: 08/06/09

What I like about this Great movie is the action and it is a real true war story. Audie Murphy is a true American war Hero, he won every medal that the United States Military has to award for bravery and Honor, but not only that he won many medals from our alies such a France, Britan and other countries aswell. Audie is forever the King of all American Hero's. Speaking as a Vietnam Veteran myself it was Audie Murphy who gave me the reason to enlisted into the USMC in 1969 for "Duty To My Country". I Love all his movies, be they war or cowboy!! When you see this great movie "TO Hell and Back" you see his real true life's story unfold in front of you, and you will never forget Audie "A True American Patriot." God Bless America!!!Thanks, John

To Hell and Back (DVD 2004)
Review created: 07/10/09

Audie Murphy was a great American. He came from humble beginnings to be a leader of men in combat. He showed exceptional courage on the battlefield. He was a Patriot and fought for the freedom of mankind against the 20th century's worst government. I like that he eventually played himself in the movie. He died to young. Excessive Alcohol use was a way for him to deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which left him impaired. The tough guys of WWII did not have a clue how to diagnose PTSD, or treat it immediately after the war. Our young fighting men and women could learn a lot by studying his dedication to being a soldier. He is an example of a genuine hero, not some nacicistic self indulgent Hollywood actor playing a role. No actor could ever play his role with authenticity. This is not a film with exagerated stunts. It is very well directed and portrays what combat was like during WWII. We are fortunate he survived to make this film because he could recall the conversations and the events. I enjoy a good war story, but this movie is special because of its' authenticity.

  Small Town Boy Makes Good
Review created: 03/18/09
by:

Audie Murphy was definitely a small town boy, and he definitely made good.
Being from rural east texas, and having quit school in the eighth grade, he did good to be able to join the armed forces to begin with. He was enlisted into the Army after having been denied entrance to all the other services.
Due to his attitude toward his military service he was constantly being promoted ahead of his peers at a very young age. He took his job very seriously.
He distinguished himself by repeated acts of extreme valor, and went on to become, after seven combat operations with the 3rd Inf. Div. the most highly decorated soldier of WWII. By then he had reached the ripe old age of 19 and was a 2LT.
This movie is historically accurate, the sets are very believable, and the sound effects of the battle scenes are very good.
I bought this movie, which I have seen before, because I wanted to see it on my state of the art DVD/Plasma TV.
I am very glad I did.

BIO of the MOST decorated WW2 Soldier~played by HIMSELF
Review created: 01/05/09(updated 01/05/09)

PLOT: BIO BASED ON BEST SELLING BOOK~ Audie Murphy plays HIMSELF ~ in this gem of a movie~ about the MOST decorated American World War 2 Soldier~ and he was ONLY 19 years old~

Bio: and a bit of a "soap" feel at times but over all GREAT CASTING IN THIS ONE~ This starts with 12 year old Audie quitting school to earn money to support his sibligs ~ at 16 Audie a "very mature" 16 due to his responsiblities with his family~ has his mother die and he enrolls in the military at the start of World War 2 to continue to support his siblings~ turned down BY several branches of the military because he was a small man~ he ends up being a foot soldier~ what he lacked in Size he made up for in quiet intelligence and determination~he quickly works his way up to Sargeant~ADD some good casting as his fellow soldiers ~ WE like them~ Marshall Thompson (Dakatari~) Jack Kelly (Maverick) ADD some humor and draw us into the military scenes~also we see scenes of his courage which won medal after medal~ ending up a second Lt due to the need for officers they planned to send him to West Point based on his outstanding military feats and records~ but he was wounded~ by the time he was 19 years old he received every medal the US could give him including the higest the Congressional Medal of Honor~ based on courage. His wounds had him exit the miltary where he his personal life is more than sad~ THE MOVIE ENDS AT THE AWARDING OF THE MEDAL OF HONOR AND THE END OF HIS MILITARY CAREER~ / his own life as an adult and post World War 2 was rather SAD with Post Tramatic Stress Disorder which they did not treat or know what it was back then~ and he also battled depression and some battles with the Bottle too~ This is a great movie with holds the attention and more than inspires~ and to have AUDIE himself acting his own life is more than facinating~ I GIVE IT A SOLID 9 OUT OF 10 FOR BIO THAT HOLDS OUR ATTENTION AND INSPIRES US~

  To Hell and Back
Review created: 12/24/07

First off, I'll admit to a bit of positive prejudice...Audie's first wife was my 1st cousin, once removed, Wanda HENDRIX. Audie's story is wonderfully inspiring and has been backed up by many family members and friends, who went through parts of it with him.
I wish we had known more about post-traumatic stress back then. If folks had known that Audie had problems, maybe more could have been done.
Thank the good Lord, we still have a few good men who honor their country, their God and their families and are willing to fight to preserve our liberties. Even tho they were divorced, our family still honors Audie for his bravery and strength.
Incidentally, his family has a website up that is really great.
God bless and Merry Christmas!!
