The trouble is that, for all its glitz and glamour, Heavenly Sword never quite reaches the high bar set by Sony's first and primary action franchise. But what the game does--and it does it well--is offer up its own unique and satisfying take on the action genre that God of War helped redefine.
Heaven And Hell
We won't go too deeply into the details of Heavenly Sword's story, as half the fun is in letting the narrative develop over the course of the game but if there is one thing Heavenly Sword does well, it's the narrative story: the main character Nariko belongs to a tribe whose fate is tied to a prophecy which proclaimed that a man would be born into their midst to save them. Unfortunately Nariko, who was born at the prophesized time, was born a woman, a fact that her fellow clansmen see as an omen of doom. Tied into the prophecy is the titular Heavenly Sword, a magical blade that is under the protection of the clan's protection. The evil King Bohan seeks the blade to consolidate his power and a war breaks out.
It's during this ensuing conflict that Nariko falls into possession of the Heavenly Sword and arms herself with it, setting into motion the events of the game. Suffice it to say, the production values in the game are top notch and it definitely has the cinematic flair that truly memorable games like Half-Life 2, Halo and yes, God of War, possess.
This is supplemented by a ton of unlockable Hollywood-style extras like behind-the-scenes clips and animated vignettes that flesh out the game's narrative. The game's graphics also take full advantage of the PS3's horsepower, with stunning backdrops and fantastic character animations. The in-game cinematics have a Hollywood quality to them, thanks to superb motion-capping and fine acting, including a great performance by Andy Serkis, he of Gollum and King Kong fame. The character animations are also smooth and adeptly choreographed. Nariko, especially, moves with a sense of fluidity and grace and at points, the game brings to mind fight sequences from popular wushu movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.

Last week, Sony released a demo to one of the most anticipated games for the year.Playstation 3 – Heavenly Sword.
The game stars a female character by the name of Nariko, A ninja fighter with a lot of killer moves. Though the game is nothing like God of War, If you liked god of war, your going to love Heavenly Sword.
The demo starts with a cut scene that does really give much away about the story line. The cut scene is not real time it’s a video (that sucks). When the cut scene concludes, you control Nariko standing and overlooking the terrain from a high cliff. The graphics are amazing. The environment has waterfalls cascading down a cliff, A rainbow that fades out or becomes more solid looking as you change the camera angle, and the wind movement. After checking out the breath taking scenery, you much walk over to a glowing orb look alike thingy.
The first action in the demo takes place descending down a rope that is connected a pillar off in the distance. The scene is done in real time and follows the God of war type button presses to forward the action. Once you made it down to the pillar, you engage in combat.
Heavenly Sword uses a unique battle system that differentiates it with God of war quite well. There is a lot more countering strategy than God of way and you can pick up almost anything and throw it at your enemies using the Sixaxis motion control.
After defeating all of the enemies, you cut the final rope connected to the pillar and descend down to the next playable area of the game. More enemies attack and the demo gives you a few more minutes of showing off its fight system. You will notice during the fight sequence, a lot of times you will get these close ups, showing the moves you used to kill your enemy.(very nice)
The demo ends with axe enemies breaking through a door nearby. Although the demo is less then ten minutes long, It does have a load of replay value. You can go back through and see all of the different combos or just look around at the environment. The graphics are simply amazing.
In closing, a five minute demo is just to short to make me go and spend sixty bucks on a game. Though the demo does not talk much about the storyline, I believe that is what is going to be the main selling point. I personally would just rent the game.

OK, I just got the game from my local rental store and I have to say, I'm very impressed with this game. The graphics and game play is just amazing to say the least and the story line is what brings the best in this game.
Make Sure and watch the 5 heavenly sword movies to get a in depth look into the story. just look at (google search heavenly sword small movies)
You need to rent this game so you can see the playstation 3 doing what it does best...create amazing graphics.

This is great game with an excellent engine, awesome graphics which makes it a great adventure game. The combos are beautiful and insane
It is not that hard to learn to play this game. Mostly you can get by with some button mashing but the good move still requires some skills. What can i say the main character is hot and you has a nice blade which hacks everyone and everything. I really did enjoy the game. It's definitely worth your money. I liked the story, and the game play.

I loved the gameplay with the sword and the bow, lots of combos and cool moves, Great graphics and you can pick up and shoot stuff and control where it goes in slow motion in 1st person of the object. No downside. challenging and lots of replay value. I bought it because i heard it was one of the best ps3 games, i heard right!

1) it was a bargain as it was on ebay
2) a fantastically put together game with proper music score
3) it does the ps3 justice in terms of graphics and gameplay even on a rear projection crt monitor! up to 720p on a hd tv apparently
4) LAG free and smooth gameplay. the enemy artificial intelligence means you are challenged and its not easy all the way through
5) a must buy for your collection, be the envy of all your friends :)

After the long wait for a great game...(other then call of duty 3 which is amazing simply for the online experince) Heavenly Sword arises. Great game play, awesome visuals, the acting is superb. The cinematic scenes are so life like it's the scary. The game could be a bit longer, but I've found myself playing alot of the sections of each chapter over and over for fun. A must have for people with a ps3!

I personally only play FPS games on PC, and sports games on my console. I decided to purchase this game because of watching a kid play the demo at Fry's. The graphics are absolutely amazing and the controls are extremely fluid. However, I paid good money for my XBR3 and there's very few things that look "cheap" on it. Although the environment, landscape, weather conditions, fight scenes are extremely accurate, Nariko actually has the worst graphics. Her clothes look a bit polygonal and her hair is awful. It literally looks like pieces of straw. I'm not part of the fashion police, but you're basically looking at Nariko the whole time, so I would think she should be perfect in her depiction. The other reason why this didn't get a 5-star review is the length of the game. The creators of this game obviously exhausted a lot of effort on the gameplay, layout, controls, and they did a great job. It's a revolutionary game. Unfortunately, the game is just too short. It's got great playability after you complete it, but I'd prefer much more hours of gameplay after shelling out $60.00.

This game have some of the best graphics, gameplay, acting, audio of any available platform.
I don't give it a 5/5 only because the game is a little short (6-7 hours)and have sometimes some screen tearing (barely noticeable).

One of the best games for the PS3. Definitely a must have. A fun, action-packed, adventure from beginning to end. Graphics are amazing, gameplay is solid, sound is awesome! The only downfall I can think of is that the game is short. Some stages are really easy. Other than that, its a 10!!! Go buy it now!

I must say, as an average gamer, this is now one of my favorite games. I was referenced about it from a friend and decided to give it a try. The graphics are stunningly beautiful, feels like you're taking part in a movie. Not only are the characters life-like, but the environments are gorgeous and stretch for probably a couple of miles. The gameplay is easy to grasp. Anyone who has played a beat-em-up game will catch on without memorizing any of the combos. As far as shooting, the aftertouch adds a wonderful new element to the game. It's quite entertaining how accurate you can shoot people and objects. The story is compelling and drawing, the player can get really into it and feel the emotion going on between the characters. I personally felt the game was short, but is does offer unique challenges that make me replay the levels. (not something I usually do with games. I tend to finish a level and not return.)Overall, wonderful game, would LOVE to see more of these. ^^ I highly recommend it for an PS3 library.

One of the most exciting games I've ever played for the PS3, you can interact so much with the caracter, it's incredible, the camera works fantanstic, the combos, the bosses, graphics, I mean everything is just off the chart. A lot of fun to play again and again, i beat so many other games and just want to get rid of them, but heavenly sword is not one of those.
I would say this is be a good reminder of what your ps3 is capable of doing.
If you own a PS3 or can borrow one ;) this is a must have/play.

One of the best games I ever played. Went straighht into my Top 10 list. Disliked the aftertouch part, but learned afterwords that I could turn off the Six Axis motion controller and use the directional buttons when using Aftertouch. It made the game easier and more enjoyable. Very excellent fighting style reminds me of God of War, when using two swords with chains on them and flinging them at people, it is very kool.

Heavenly Sword to me is pretty much a God of War but your a chick with a huge sword hehe it plays just like god of war and pretty much the same everything the story is quite good not as good as god of war yet again what is as good as god of war but its a good game to play its fun and as with god of war you will probably play untill you beat it and its not a huge game witch makes it fun the graphics are good as you would expect from a blu-ray disc so again on my scale from 1-10 this goes for a 9.

If you love button smashers, this is the game for you. Similar to God of War with a few extra bells and whistles as far as gameplay goes. It does an excellent job of showing off the PS3 SixAxis controller when you steer cannonballs, arrows, and other projectiles in what they call "aftertouch." They put a lot into the production of the game, and the graphics are incredible... better than I've seen in any other game before.
The only downside would have to be how short the game lasts. It can be beaten in 2-3 hours total. Replay value is neither bad nor good when compared to other action/button smasher games.

Previously rented the game and loved playing it. The enemies were a bit repetitive but the game is totally worth buying. I only beat it on normal level so now that I own it, I'm going to try to beat it on difficult. Shooting the arrows is the best part.

Heavenly Sword is a hack and slash action game similar to God of War, but more heavily focused on the action aspect. It has beautiful graphics and is an amazing start to a franchise despite its missteps, the biggest of which is the brevity of the game's story and single player campaign.
Gameplay: 8/10
Pros: 3 different stances with some great combos and transitions, engaging story, exciting and chaotic action gameplay.
Cons: The ranged stance is almost entirely useless, only 2 attack buttons, not enough puzzles, and an extensive overuse of "aftertouch" (tilt controlled) aiming /firing missions.
Graphics: 9.5/10
Pros: Absolutely gorgeous with a fantastic art direction and amazing character design and animation. Cut-scenes are gorgeous. Impressive number of characters on the screen. A truly technical feat that exemplifies the PS3's power.
Cons: Repetitive enemies, and some questionable character design choices (Roach?)
Sound/Music: 8.5/10
Pros: Great voice acting, epic score, and excellent weapon twings& twangs. AAA music/sound fx.
Cons: Not a fan of the retarded girl sidekick Kai, though in the end her story makes it better to swallow. Flying Fox is the most annoyingly voiced character in recent memory...he's terrible. Roach is also a little cliched...though voicework is good.
Lasting Appeal: 6/10
Pros: Extremely entertaining from beginning to end with a very engrossing story which comes to a satisfying conclusion.

Heavenly Sword was a very enjoyable and engaging rental. I beat the game in less than 2 days and had fun doing it, but I didn't even come close to playing it nonstop. The game can really be flown through. It's a shame that there wasn't more depth in the combat or harder puzzles (and possible backtracking) a la God of War to lengthen this game out. I like the variety of missions, even if some are not as crisp as the main combat ones. The monotony of the gameplay is decently broken up to get you through the game and story, but a game that is over so quickly is definitely not worth $60.

Heavenly Sword is a hack and slash action game similar to God of War, but more heavily focused on the action aspect. It has beautiful graphics and is an amazing start to a franchise despite its missteps, the biggest of which is the brevity of the game's story and single player campaign.
Gameplay: 8/10
Pros: 3 different stances with some great combos and transitions, engaging story, exciting and chaotic action gameplay.
Cons: The ranged stance is almost entirely useless, only 2 attack buttons, not enough puzzles, and an extensive overuse of "aftertouch" (tilt controlled) aiming /firing missions.
Graphics: 9.5/10
Pros: Absolutely gorgeous with a fantastic art direction and amazing character design and animation. Cut-scenes are gorgeous. Impressive number of characters on the screen. A truly technical feat that exemplifies the PS3's power.
Cons: Repetitive enemies, and some questionable character design choices (Roach?)
Sound/Music: 8.5/10
Pros: Great voice acting, epic score, and excellent weapon twings& twangs. AAA music/sound fx.
Cons: Not a fan of the retarded girl sidekick Kai, though in the end her story makes it better to swallow. Flying Fox is the most annoyingly voiced character in recent memory...he's terrible. Roach is also a little cliched...though voicework is good.
Lasting Appeal: 6/10
Pros: Extremely entertaining from beginning to end with a very engrossing story which comes to a satisfying conclusion.

Quite simply...This game really does an amazing job at everything a game is supposed to do. Superb graphics, excellent storyline, and great acting combine in this title for an awesome game. I have the game now and love it. The game does have a few glitches in it, but are minor considering the entire game. Well worth the money spent!
