Album Notes Personnel: Jessie Allen Cooper (soprano saxophone); Buddy Kithara (kalimba); Jan Brodin (sound effects). Recording information: Control Center, Los Angeles, California. The first track on HEAVEN SENT, "By the Ocean," with its bird calls and roaring waves, should put the listener on notice that the music on this album takes its cue from the sounds of the natural world. Titles like "Morning Tide," "By a Stream," and "In the Mountains" support the idea. While one does not traditionally associate the soprano saxophone with calming, environmentally-minded ambient music, Jessie Allen Cooper has mastered the fusion by generating sounds that are soothing, expansive, and based on the calls of birds and animals. Cooper also chooses his collaborators carefully. HEAVEN SENT is distinguished by the sound effects of Jan Brodin, who contributes an ever-shifting backdrop of landscape and natural sounds, and particularly the kalimba of Buddy Kithara. Kithara's thumb piano, heard through the record, offers an earthy, percussive counterpoint to Cooper's expressive, fluttering melodies. Cooper's phrases blend perfectly with the clattering kalimba and the wash of natural sounds, creating a sound environment that is strikingly organic and meditative.
