The title song to this 1997 album breaks the one hour mark. Even at 61 minutes long, "Heaven Sent" never outstays its welcome, continuously building, retreating, undulating, and evolving. The trio of vocalist Jad Fair, guitarist John Sluggett and drummer Gilles Rieder cut the song playing live directly to a two-track recorder. Keyboards, other percussion and effects were added later, but very judiciously. "Heaven Sent" is Jad at his most romantic, and since this line-up of the band had been together for quite a while, the interplay is nearly telepathic. There are not many chords in the song, but Sluggett plays them like they're all that he needs--and he's absolutely right. Nine additional songs utilize bits "Heaven Sent" with new vocals and instrumental overdubs.
