Place, time, and mystery make good viewing
Review created: 10/06/09

The BBC is noted for both great period pieces and good mysteries. This series combines both winning qualities of the BBC and comes out a winner. There are three 90 minutes mysteries included in the set. They work as stand alones and yet viewing all of them leads to a fuller understanding of the main character. The series takes place in Kenya between the wars. There the British ex pats run the world and have the arrogance to match. Our hero, played by Trevor Eve, has been sent to this 'foreign' place for his bad behavior as a British police officer who took the law into his own hands. The acting is good, the setting is wonderful and mysteries worthy.

  Heat of the Sun DVD

There was not anything to dislike about Heat of the Sun. The acting, the location, the historical aspects of colonial Africa, the racial prejudice, and the good police work, and just the teasing hint of the romance between the main characters. Trevor Eve is an excellent and attractive actor. Susannah Harker is gives a performance quite different from Jane in Pride and Prejudice.
The setting in 1931 is very interesting. I would highly recommend this. I'm sorry we don't get more of these series.

Superb acting by all performers. Interesting plots and characters. I watched this on TV back in the day and was impressed, after re watching this series I am still impressed and wonder why this series was cancelled before it had a chance to get off it's feet. Great series.

  Colonial Kenya under British rule
Review created: 01/28/08

I first saw part of this too-brief series a few years ago on PBS and it stuck with me. Still interested in Africa, I ordered the set. I was not disappointed. The acting is keen and nuanced. The plots are complicated enough that I enjoyed watching each episode a second time to catch the clues I'd missed. The main character is both cerebral and ready to get physical with guys acting stupid. Captivating!
