The Everly Brothers are one of the most enduring influences of early rock 'n' roll. Literally growing up on stage, Don and Phil Everly personified rock's changing face from its country and R&B roots to its exploration of psychedelia. As boys, they sang on their father's family radio show on KMA in Iowa. Moving to Knoxville in 1953 to pursue a career as a duo, they cut their teeth for the next four years on material that was more mainstream and urban than their countrified origins. In 1957 they scored big with "Bye Bye Love," a perfect summary of their musical heritage. The song featured a rocking guitar intro showing their tougher rock leanings, swooning vocals worthy of their wholesome country background, and subject matter laced with the carefully insinuated innocence of Tin Pan Alley. HEARTACHES & HARMONIES gives awe-inspiring testimony to the Everlys' position as early rock's most influential duo. Their impeccable harmonies laid the groundwork for what people later confused as Beatle creations. Listen to the Beatles' PLEASE PLEASE ME after an Everly Brothers' record and the homage is obvious. When they covered other artists' material, the Everly stamp was unmistakable; rollicking tours through Little Richard's "Lucille" and Mickey & Sylvia's "Love Is Strange" show their masterful ability to make any material their own. If you're interested in getting the low-down on where rock's roots lie, immerse yourself in the Everly Brothers' luxurious HEARTACHES & HARMONIES.
