These two discs contain the entirety of the recordings Hank Williams made in 1949 for the Health & Happiness radio show. While each of the eight shows (all recorded over the course of two days a week apart) begins with the opening theme "Happy Rovin' Cowboy" and closes with "Sally Goodin'," there's no other duplication of material. This collection offers a birds-eye view of Williams at the peak of his powers, before his tribulations began to overwhelm him.
Backed by his regular road band, he takes on spirituals ("A Mansion on the Hill"), light-hearted material ("Mind You Own Business"), broken-hearted song poetry ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"), and vintage honky-tonk ("I'm a Long Gone Daddy"). A number of more obscure tunes ("Wagner," "Bill Cheatham") are also included, further enriching the experience. Perhaps the most striking aspect of these essential live recordings is the realization that Williams's soul-piercing wail seemingly came as naturally to him as the most casual guitar strum. The HEALTH & HAPPINESS SHOWS are an indispensable part of the Williams catalog.
