With the Stooges' chaos, the Buzzcocks' bratty joie de vivre, and a pinch of Motley Crue's debauchery, New Zealand's the Datsuns dash into their fourth record, 2009's HEADSTUNTS, with reckless rock abandon. However, that's not to say the record is dated at all; the opening four tracks burst out with a fury, a feel like they could have emanated from any dim bar or musty garage over the half century prior. The foursome even flirt with ambient, glam, and prog rock on "Eye of the Needle," a five-minute phantasmagoria of Brian Eno channeled through Jane's Addiction, coming out the other end with an original sheen.
